810 State Route 20, Sedro-Woolley, WA, 98284 (position can also serve in Denver, CO or Washington, D.C. depending on candidate location)

  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700-Hour Slot

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of jobshiringnearme.org Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the NPS Park Planning, Facilities, and Lands Directorate, PAVE Program will host an Outdoor Recreation Fellow.

The WASO PAVE Program assists sites across the NPS in improving access for visitors who have disabilities. This includes improving physical access as well as programmatic opportunities. This position will assist in fulfilling our organizational needs to help improve outdoor recreation opportunities for visitors with disabilities, veterans, and seniors as a part of the EXPLORE Act requirements.

description of Duties:

This position will assist with the following:

  • assessing, documenting, and performing gap analysis assessments of current information on nps.gov regarding access for visitors who have disabilities
  • completing trail assessments, including measuring/calculating required metrics, photographing, and writing trail descriptions
  • performing site visits along with the PAVE staff to document barriers and opportunities, identify areas for improvement, and communicate current conditions on outreach and communications

This position will be a combination of field work / site visits and computer work / report writing.

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Holds an undergraduate degree in communications, outdoor recreation, education, design, or related fields
  • Strong writing and communication skills,
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Member will receive NPS training in:

  • Program codes (ABAAS, ICC, etc) and laws & policies,
  • Universal Design,
  • Working with people with disabilities,
  • NPS.gov and the NPS App,
  • NPS branding, design, and comms,
  • Program terminology and appropriate language,
  • Plain Language,
  • Section 508

Benefits:

  • Living Allowance of $600.00 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service. Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
