Overview

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, seeks a Global Science AI and Conservation Intern.

WWF Overview

For 60 years, WWF has worked to help people and nature thrive. As one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, WWF works in more than 100 countries, connecting cutting-edge conservation science with the collective power of our partners in the field – more than one million supporters in the United States and five million globally, as well as partnerships with communities, companies, and governments.

At WWF, we are working to create an organization where the richness of all our unique views, experiences, and backgrounds combine to create the most sustainable and inclusive conservation outcomes possible, bringing the greatest benefit to the planet and every person who lives on it.

Across the many cultures and individuals that represent WWF, we are unified by one mission, one brand, and one common set of values: Courage, Respect, Integrity and Collaboration.

position Summary

WWF regularly generates reports on its conservation work spanning many years, offices, and languages. These reports can be quite extensive, making them challenging to swiftly summarize and compare. We would like to leverage this collection to better understand our impact, learn from our previous work, and plan for the future of conservation.

This project applies natural language processingtechniques to contextualize, map, and help analyze our project reports. The Global Science AI and Conservation Graduate Intern will work with the Global Science Data and Technology Lead Scientist, the Global Science team, and other impact measurement experts at WWF.

Please note: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired willbe required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

Responsibilities

This work builds upon an existing code base that already helps analyze progress reports and helps understand what they’re measuring. The Global Science AI and Conservation Graduate Intern will extend this work in several directions:

Extend the existing Application by automating the process of uploading documents.
  • Extend the geospatial extraction efforts to create a database of locations from the documents.
  • Leverage foundation models to measure long-term impacts of earlier conservation efforts.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Pursuing a graduate program in computer science, data science, or environmental science with a documented strength in computational approaches.
  • Expertise in the Python programming language.

  • experience leveraging large language model APIs (especially, but not restricted to, Gemini).

  • Experience with geospatial information systems.

  • Identifies and aligns with WWF’s core values:

    • COURAGE – We demonstrate courage through our actions, we work for change where it’s needed, and we inspire people and institutions to tackle the greatest threats to nature and the future of the planet, which is our home.
    • INTEGRITY – We live the principles we call on others to meet. We act with integrity, accountability, and transparency, and we rely on facts and science to guide us and to ensure that we learn and evolve.
    • RESPECT – We honor the voices and knowledge of people and communities that we serve, and we work to secure their rights to a sustainable future.
    • COLLABORATION – We deliver impact at the scale of the challenges we face through the power of collective action and innovation.

Location:

Hybrid (San Francisco, CA or Washington, DC office) or remote.

US Remote – WWF employs interns in all states with the exception of: Hawaii, Kentucky, Nevada, Oklahoma or Wyoming.

Compensation:

Paid – $22.50per hour (full-time,35 hours per week)
