The Latino Heritage Internship Program seeks to engage young professionals in natural resource and cultural heritage careers. Applicants must meet the following additional requirements:

• Be between the ages of 18–30, or up to 35 if a veteran
• Be willing to undergo a background check upon hiring
• Have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record

Position description

The Youth Program Educator will support educational outreach and community engagement efforts at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park by developing and delivering Spanish-language educational programming and materials. This internship focuses on increasing accessibility to park resources for Spanish-speaking audiences while fostering meaningful connections between the park, local schools, and surrounding communities.

The intern will work closely with park staff to research Abraham Lincoln’s life and legacy and translate this history into engaging, age-appropriate Spanish-language educational resources. A core component of this position includes collaborating with local high school Spanish students to co-create materials, encouraging youth involvement in cultural heritage preservation and interpretation.

Through this work, the intern will help expand the park’s Spanish-language offerings, improve outreach to Spanish-speaking families, and enhance visitor experiences for non-English speakers. This position offers hands-on experience in interpretation, education, translation, community engagement, and public history programming.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on Abraham Lincoln’s life and the historical significance of Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park
• Collaborate with park staff to identify key interpretive themes and educational priorities
• Develop age-appropriate Spanish-language educational materials, including brochures, activity sheets, and digital content
• Create visual aids and multimedia presentations for school visits, community programs, and park events
• Translate and assist with the delivery of periodic Spanish-language educational programming
• Organize and facilitate workshops with local high school Spanish students to involve them in material development
• Lead discussions and brainstorming sessions to gather student input and feedback
• Assist in designing a promotional strategy to distribute educational materials within the community
• Support planning and implementation of community events or school presentations showcasing new materials
• Develop and implement feedback mechanisms to evaluate the effectiveness of educational resources
• Collect and analyze feedback from students, teachers, park staff, and visitors to refine materials
• Work Products include educational materials at least three different types of Spanish-language educational resources (e.g., brochures, activity sheets, and digital content) completed by the end of the internship

Qualifications

• Enrollment in or recent graduation from a program related to Education, Spanish, History, Public History, Interpretation, Cultural Resource Management, Museum Studies, or a related field
• Spanish language proficiency (spoken and written)
• Strong research, writing, and organizational skills
• Experience or interest in education, interpretation, outreach, or youth programming
• Ability to develop engaging, age-appropriate educational content
• Comfort working with students, educators, and community members
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with park staff, students, and community partners
• Interest in cultural heritage preservation, public history, and community engagement
• Adaptability, creativity, and willingness to learn in a dynamic educational environment

The Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority is a special hiring authority available to qualifying interns. The intern must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or a veteran up to age 35 and complete 640 hours of work on an appropriate conservation project to be eligible for this hiring authority. Upon successful completion of the PLC project(s), the intern is eligible for two years to be hired non-competitively into a federal seasonal, term, or permanent position.
