WILDLIFE REHABILITATION HOSPITAL COORDINATOR

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital Coordinator reports to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager and is responsible for managing the daily rehabilitation operation, maintaining the facility, supplies, and organization in the hospital and homecare. Managing the wildlife helpline and accession desk for humane animal rescue. Maintaining the financial records for hospital purchases.  The Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital Coordinator carries out administrative, treatment and husbandry duties, following written and verbal protocols established by the rehabilitation manager to train staff, interns and volunteers to ensure the safe, effective and efficient operation of the hospital.

The priorities for this position are to 1) provide high-quality customer service, in-depth knowledge of wildlife operations, resources and procedures to provide counseling for wildlife related issues and inquiries, and 2) save the lives of injured and orphaned wild animals in our care by assisting in the efficient and professional administration of the department.  

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital Coordinator:

• Provides excellent, compassionate and professional customer service to callers and visitors, ensuring a positive customer experience.
• Provides biologically sound information, resources and over-the-phone support and referrals to callers and in-person visitors.
• Is responsible for the daily operations of the wildlife rehabilitation hospital, including administration (inventory, records, compliance, continuing and creating /maintaining a positive work environment for staff and volunteers.
• Works in cooperation with other rehabilitation staff (rehabilitation manager, volunteer coordinator, veterinarian, technicians) and volunteers to provide quality care for wild animal patients, meet department goals, and further the museum’s mission of inspiring and connecting people with wildlife in order to make the world we share healthier and safer for all of us.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

ADMINISTRATIVE

• Works with staff, interns and volunteers to ensure the highest standards of hygiene, husbandry, veterinary care, safety, and customer service in the hospital and in home care;
• Order, stock and maintain department inventory (food, supplies);
• Maintain inventory and financial records for purchasing and work with the hospital manager on fiscal year analysis and reports;
• Monthly credit card reconciliation;
• Works with the wildlife rehabilitation training coordinator, volunteer coordinator, husbandry coordinator and rehabilitation manager  to assist in the development of training curricula and materials, help teach basic and continuing education classes, including on shift training especially for intakes and hotline;
• Communicates directions on how to safely capture and transport wildlife to our center;
• Maintains common information centers, electronic and physical, keep protocols and safety documentation updated;
• Works with the rehabilitation manager to set and implement department and organizational goals;
• Writes and distributes timely updates and communications to staff and volunteers;
• Supports the efforts of other departments to inform the public and raise awareness of Lindsay and its mission, and communicate the stories of animals in the hospital to garner greater financial support and inspire and connect people with wildlife;
• May assist in the inspection and maintainance of home care volunteers and facilities.  Perform monthly check-ins with homecare volunteers to ensure animal care records are updated in a timely manner;
• Some travel including for pickup of supplies and for repair of equipment;
• Other related administrative duties, as needed.

Animal Care

• May assist veterinarian and wildlife technician staff in patient exams, procedures and treatment, and maintenance of animal records;
• Demonstrates situational awareness during emergencies, including escape of potentially dangerous animals and rabies vector species;
• May assist staff and volunteers in providing supportive care (diet preparation, feeding animals, cleaning enclosures and work spaces) when needed;
• Other animal care duties, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualified candidate will have a history of commitment to the welfare of wildlife, animals, or the natural environment and passion for this work.

• Educational background in wildlife rehabilitation, animal health, zoology and/or management preferred;
• Two years or more of supervisory experience, including working with volunteers;
• Minimum of one year working in an animal shelter or veterinary hospital setting;
• Knowledge of California native wildlife;
• Demonstrated proficiency in the following skills:  organizational, verbal and written communication, public speaking;
• Proficiency with database management, financial spreadsheets, use of Microsoft and Google software;
• Well organized and motivated
• Clean DMV record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Lindsay’s wildlife hospital can be fast-paced, intense and emotionally fraught for staff, volunteers and the public.  The successful candidate should possess the situational awareness to navigate this environment.

• Have empathy, compassion, patience, and be able to make and execute difficult decisions regarding the lives of injured, sick, and orphaned wildlife;
• There is a frequent need to stand, stoop, twist, walk, lift animal crates and other objects (up to 50 pounds), and perform similar actions during the course of the workday;
• Will be handling/restraining sick, injured and orphaned native wild animals – exposure to zoonosis, bites, scratches and other potential injury;
• Pre-exposure rabies vaccinations – if none at time of hire, must be able to obtain within three months of employment;
• Lindsay Wildlife Experience is a drug-free, smoke-free environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.  Requires handling, using vision and hearing, and talking.
• Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, sitting, reaching, pushing/pulling, balancing and twisting.  Occasionally requires carrying, kneeling, foot controls, bending and crouching.  Rarely requires climbing.

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.  Rarely requires emergency situations.

OVERALL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards;
• Primarily office environment, as well as public exhibit hall programming, and infrequent outdoor even and/or outreach sites.
