Job description

Tangled Bank jobshiringnearme.org is seeking a Wildlife jobshiringnearme.org Technician based out of Asheville, NC. This position supports a variety of field-based conservation projects across the southeastern United States.

Projects are diverse and vary seasonally. Current work includes conducting biodiversity surveys (eDNA sampling, camera trap setup, visual surveys) across the southeast, restoring southern Appalachian mountain bog habitat, surveying for rare species including bog turtles and Hickory Nut Gorge green salamanders, and conducting wetland habitat assessments. The chosen candidate will also assist in other tasks including data management, report writing/ generating deliverables, project planning, potential genetics lab work, and other tasks relevant to the position.

This role requires extended travel throughout the year, with trips ranging from several weeks up to three months. Work vehicles are provided. The position also involves regular interaction with private landowners, project partners, and clients.

This is a full-time contractor position with an initial duration of three months and the possibility of permanent extension.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain).
  • Willingness to travel extensively, potentially for months at a time, across multiple states in project areas. This position may also require occasional weekend work.
  • Capable of moderate physical activity, including hiking up to 8 miles in a day, wading in deep wetlands, operating power tools such as a brush cutter and potentially a chainsaw, and lifting 50+ lbs.
  • Comfortable working in proximity to potentially hazardous wildlife, including stinging insects, venomous snakes, and alligators.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams of two, collaborating closely with one other person for extended periods in the field.
  • Comfortable interacting professionally with private landowners, clients, and project partners and representing the organization in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Basic understanding of GPS and mapping tools for site navigation and data collection.
  • Strong attention to detail, specifically in regards to accurate data collection and organization.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written protocols.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical writing.
  • Basic GIS capabilities.
  • Intimate familiarity with herpetofaunal sampling methods.
  • Working knowledge of species and ecosystems found in the Southeastern U.S.

Position Details

  • Temporary Employee with expectation of 40 hour work week.
  • 3 month position with possibility of extension.
  • Start Date: May 2026
  • Compensation:$2500-$3000/month depending on experience.
