The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is home to Washington’s largest on-call fire department, responsible for protecting over 13 million acres of state and privately owned lands. Working with interagency partners, DNR embraces an all-hands, all-lands vision. DNR’s Fire Program serves the communities of Washington and is a strong advocate of wildland fire prevention, suppression, and mitigation. The DNR is looking for a bright, quick-thinking individual to fill the role of the Assistant Fire Unit Manager for the Coast Unit in the Olympic Region. This position is perfect for those who enjoy hazard-risk mitigation, collaborating with interagency peers, and using professional judgment to determine necessary resources during fire season. This individual will be expected to provide critical leadership in initial and extended attack fire suppression. Strong decision-making skills and a desire to take on responsibility are valued and encouraged. Responsibilities:
This position assists in providing leadership and oversight of the fire program in West Clallam and West Jefferson Counties for the Washington DNR. You will have responsibility for hiring, training, and providing daily leadership for 1 Wildland Fire Management Supervisor, 2 engine module leaders, and 6 firefighters.
Required Qualifications:
- Certified as a NWCG Single Resource Boss.
- Certified NWCG Incident Commander Type 5.
- Supervisory Experience.
- Experience in agreement and contract negotiations.
- Team effectiveness- understanding and ability to increase team effectiveness by focusing on situational awareness, communication skills, teamwork, task allocation, and decision-making within a framework of standard operating procedures.
- Ability to empower employees to create an effective workforce.
- Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
