Friends of the Urban Forest is hiring for a Tree Planting Manager. A position with Friends of the Urban Forest is an opportunity to join a passionate, dedicated, and friendly team at a nationally respected organization with opportunities for professional advancement. Our mission – to bring neighbors together to plant and care for San Francisco’s ideal urban forest – is more vital than ever due to the role of the urban forest in fighting climate change.
The Tree Planting Manager plays a key leadership role in delivering this work. As a member of the Tree Planting Team, this position manages the full lifecycle of neighborhood planting projects – from site evaluation and species selection to volunteer workdays and project closeout. The Tree Planting Manager works directly with residents, community groups, public agencies, and vendors to ensure that each tree is thoughtfully sited, safely planted, and positioned to thrive for years to come.
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about trees, environmental equity, and community-based work. The position combines hands-on fieldwork, project management, community collaboration, and technical arboricultural knowledge. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, clear communication, a commitment to teamwork, and the ability to balance multiple projects while maintaining high standards for safety and quality.
The Tree Planting Manager works closely with the Tree Planting Program Manager, fellow planting managers, community engagement staff, volunteers, and agency partners to advance Friends of the Urban Forest’s mission of building a healthier, more resilient, and more equitable San Francisco.
In this position, one can expect to spend 50% time working outdoors at project sites, and 50% time working either remotely or in the office, which is located in the beautiful Presidio of San Francisco. Please see the job description for more information (https://www.friendsoftheurbanforest.org/careers).
