TPWD MISSION
To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for interpretation and educational programming within the Buffalo Soldier Heritage and Outreach Program (BSHOP) around the State of Texas.

Under the direction of the Buffalo Soldiers Program Supervisor, the Buffalo Soldier Outreach Interpreter performs routine (journey-level training and development work. Responsible for interpretation and educational programming within the Buffalo Soldier Heritage Outreach Program (BSHOP) around the state of Texas. Engages the public in historical outdoor recreation and connects new audiences to Texas State Parks through the interpretation of the Buffalo Soldiers’ history. Assists with the recruitment and training of BSHOP volunteers and community partners. Acts as a subject matter expert to assist the BSHOP Program Supervisor with the research and development of interpretive programs.  Performs program administration tasks, such as confirming reservations and program details, arrival and set up times, special needs, and other outreach logistics as needed. Operates as lead staff member at events during absence of program supervisor. Required to travel overnight, and occasionally camp at Texas State Parks. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  

Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
Education: 
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree. 

Experience:

  • One year experience in public speaking and /or presenting interpretive programs;
  • One year experience coordinating event logistics and program reservations.

NOTE: Experience may have occurred concurrently.

Licensure:
Applicant must possess a valid State driver’s license.
NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS: 
Education: 
One additional year of experience in public speaking or presenting interpretive programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

Experience:
Non-paid outreach or education experience obtained from training, education and volunteering may substitute for the required experience.  
NOTE: Dates and hours per week must be reflected on application to award appropriate experience.  Certificates of completion may be required to verify experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
Education:    

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation & Parks, African American Studies, American History, Natural and/or Cultural Resource jobshiringnearme.org, or a closely related field.

Experience:   

  • Experience conducting Texas Buffalo Soldier programs;
  • Experience in outdoor education programs in areas such as map and compass, fishing, animal tracking, hiking, biking, outdoor cooking or related activities;
  • Experience working in outdoor settings such as parks, refuges, wildlife management areas, nature centers, camps or similar situations;
  • Experience creating social media to engage audiences and promote events;
  • Experience researching, developing, and presenting historical, outdoor education programs.

Licensure:

  • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) issued by the National Association of Interpretation (NAI);
  • Leave No Trace Instructor certification;
  • Wilderness First Aid certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of Buffalo Soldier History in the United States;
  • Knowledge of pre and post-Civil War History in the state of Texas;
  • Knowledge of outdoor education and interpretive principles;
  • Knowledge of barriers to outdoor participation;

  • Ability to maintain accurate records, logistics, and program data;
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;
  • Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

  • Ability to conduct marketing and outreach efforts to promote outreach programs;
  • Ability to travel to various work locations;

  • Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use;
  • Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;
  • Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;
  • Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;
  • Required to operate a State vehicle;
  • Required to travel with possible overnight stays in tents at a State park
  • Required to travel 75% with possible overnight stays in tents at a State park;
  • Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards to include wearing a period wool uniform, work rules and safety procedures;
  • Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
