The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Dalhousie University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position in the broad area of Earth surface processes. A Ph.D. is required, and previous academic or professional experience is considered favourable.
Candidates should use and develop a combination of novel field and computational methods. The position will enable us to strengthen research and teaching in terrestrial natural hazards. These hazards include, but are not limited to, those applicable to the Atlantic and Arctic regions such as wildfire, stream flooding, intraplate tectonics, tsunamis, sea-level change, glacial lake outburst floods, permafrost thawing, mass wasting, coastal erosion, and anthropogenic geohazards such as those related to mining. Experience with geospatial analysis including remote sensing would be an asset but is not required. We seek energetic and collegial candidates with exceptional prospects for maintaining externally-funded graduate research programs, international scholarly leadership, and teaching and supervisory excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Supporting this position are existing and growing departmental research and teaching strengths and graduate supervision in geophysics, biogeochemistry, (paleo)climatology, stable isotope geochemistry, geochronology including cosmogenic isotopes, atmospheric radionuclides, and thermochronology, and an emphasis on experiential learning. Our demographically youthful earth and environmental sciences department is growing in areas of environmental sciences and core earth sciences fields (three other new positions this year). Strategic research and teaching goals for our Faculty of Science and university focus on global problems and anthropogenic impacts on our terrestrial environment. Dalhousie University is the largest and highest ranked research-intensive university in Atlantic Canada and consistently ranks in the top ten best medical/doctoral universities in Canada, and 4-10 out of 63 in Canada for earth sciences.
