Supervisory Carpenter

Are you ready to begin your adventure as a Supervisory Carpenter at Baxter State Park, the iconic four-season wilderness park?

This is structure and craft work of a supervisory nature involving maintenance, repair, and rough and finish carpentry activities in all locations within Baxter State Park (remote backcountry).  Work includes planning and overseeing the work of maintenance personnel performing repair and operation of various types of equipment and carrying out maintenance, repair, construction, and skilled hand and bench carpentry duties, which include the operation of power-driven woodworking machinery.  Work assignments are received in the form of oral or written instructions, sketches, or plans.  Work is performed under limited supervision.

As a Baxter Park Supervisory Carpenter, you will:

• Plan, prioritize, build, repair, and perform construction and rough and finish carpentry work on both interior and exterior structures in order to maintain and restore existing structures and to provide conformation of new ones.
• Build, construct, and perform cabinet work in order to provide durable furnishings.
• Perform skilled benchwork carpentry to repair and restore wood items.
• Clean and inspect tools and equipment to maintain serviceability, prolong equipment life, and determine repair or replacement
• Clean and wash the work area and carpentry equipment to alleviate fire hazards and maintain a safe and efficient workspace
• Estimate projects, materials, and labor for new construction, alterations, and repairs to maximize use of available resources and to develop recommendations on cost-effective approaches to meet agency needs and goals.
• Build forms, pours, and finishes concrete/cement to make and repair walks, retaining walls, and floors.
• Maintain a variety of specialized hand and power tools to maintain continued working order of tools
• Perform winter transport of work materials to ensure adequate supplies for construction projects are readily available.
• Records project types, segment work time, and inventory of materials, equipment, and supplies in order to ensure accountability and document project status

Minimum Requirements:

• Graduation from high school or equivalent and two (2) years education and/or experience in carpentry.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills or experience:

• Knowledge of methods, techniques, and practices of carpentry trade.
• Knowledge of round log maintenance, repair methods and techniques, and carpentry tools.
• Ability to use carpentry hand and power tools.
• Ability to work from sketches and blueprints.
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
