One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose jobshiringnearme.org Corps + Charter School was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 (“Corpsmembers”) to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. position Summary:

The Field Site Supervisor I plays a vital leadership role in advancing the mission of SJCC+CS by guiding young adult (“Corpsmembers”, aged 18–27) in developing practical work skills while improving and preserving local natural landscapes. This position oversees environmental field projects across city and county parks, including trail maintenance and construction, invasive species removal, habitat restoration, urban beautification efforts, fire fuel reduction, and other conservation-related tasks. The supervisor is responsible for transporting the crew and equipment, coordinating project logistics, communicating with project partners, and ensuring high-quality, timely completion of all assigned work.

Beyond technical oversight, the Field Site Supervisor serves as a mentor and role model, fostering Corpsmember growth through skill development, goal-setting support, and consistent feedback. The role ensures strict adherence to safety standards and administrative requirements through daily reporting, safety briefings, equipment oversight, and incident documentation. By combining hands-on supervision with training, coaching, and policy enforcement, the Field Site Supervisor creates a safe, productive, and educational environment that prepares Corpsmembers for future employment while delivering meaningful community impact.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school Diploma or GED.
  • Possession of Passenger Endorsement, or commitment to obtaining one within six months of hire.
  • Possession of S-212 certification, or commitment to obtaining one within six months of hire.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience or equivalent experience that demonstrates the ability to work in team-oriented settings and lead others.
  • 1 year of field experience in any of the following: landscaping, trail maintenance and construction, vegetation management, tree maintenance and care, invasive species treatment, habitat restoration.
  • Experience operating relevant tools and their corresponding safety equipment, such as chainsaws, weed whackers, and hedgers.
  • 1 year of professional experience driving with passengers.
  • The ability to solve problems in the field with minimal assistance.
  • Strong commitment to improving the quality of life for urban youth.
  • The ability to use, and teach others to use, power and hand tools safely.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • First aid/CPR certification.
  • The ability to maintain detailed records and documentation.
  • Customer Service Experience – able to identify and resolve customer concerns.
  • Computer literate.

Driving Record and Requirements: The incumbent will drive one or more company vehicles as an essential function of this position. If the position is offered and accepted, candidates must submit a copy of their DMV driver’s record and the record must be acceptable to our auto insurance. The candidate also must possess and continue to maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Medical Verification: State law requires all employees working with youth to provide medical verification of negative tuberculosis test results within the last year. Employees will also be required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination. A physical exam may be required for positions that regularly transport passengers.

Background Check and Fingerprinting: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo LiveScan Fingerprinting as well as a background check, which includes a state and federal criminal history.

Drug Screen: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo and pass a 5-panel drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Adult Vocational teaching Credential – Landscaping.
  • Bi-lingual (English and any other language).
  • Degree from an accredited 2 or 4-year college in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Biology, or similar field.
  • Possession of any of the following certifications: Wilderness First Responder, OSHA 30 or OSHA Train the Trainer, CPR Instructor, Crosscut Chainsaw.
  • Experience driving with flatbeds and trailers.
