Summer Fisheries Intern

The intern would work out of the San Francisco Area Network (SFAN) Coho and Steelhead Monitoring Program (CSMP) based at Point Reyes National Seashore (PORE). Coho salmon populations are estimated to be at less than 1% of their historic population size within California and the populations residing in Golden Gate National Recreation Areas and PORE are considered to be a stronghold against regional population extinction.The Intern will be paired with the fishery biologist to collect vital information. Intern will receive in-depth education on techniques used to monitor endangered coho salmon and threatened steelhead along with other fish species and the linkage of our data to habitat restoration. During their service term, the Intern will learn fisheries monitoring techniques including seining, electrofishing, juvenile coho habitat typing, snorkel census, water quality monitoring, and tagging.

The Intern will also be tasked with an independent projects focused on public outreach and engagement. Potential outreach projects include web-based content aimed at educating the public on linkages between monitoring data and restoration actions, increasing public access to our data through interactive real-time data mapping, using pre-developed models to show predicted futures with and without ecological changes, and providing talks or other physical communication programs to better inform visitors on the utility of our monitoring work within the parks.

Qualifications:

Major studies relevant to this position: fisheries, freshwater ecology, marine biology, or other related life science

  • Work independently on complex projects while maintaining open lines of communication with project staff.
  • Enthusiasm towards field work in the life sciences and a strong work ethic.
  • Be in good physical fitness and ability to work full days in an outdoor field setting. The candidate will be required to work off trail, wade in streams, and be able to climb over cattle fences, downed trees, limbs, and piles of accumulated instream wood.
  • Be comfortable driving large vehicles in rural areas.

Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority (PLC)

The Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority is a special hiring authority available to qualifying interns. The intern must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or a veteran up to age 35 and complete 640 hours of work on an appropriate conservation project to be eligible for this hiring authority. Upon successful completion of the PLC project(s), the intern is eligible for two years to be hired non-competitively into a federal seasonal, term, or permanent position. The applicant must apply to a PLC-eligible position advertised on USAJobs.gov and selected off a non-competitive certificate of eligibility.
