- Recruitment range: $60,120- $66,270 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
- Performance range: $78,155 salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.
Job SummaryMandate:The Office of Student Life (OSL) provides student transition programming and support for new-to-UVic students facilitating their successful transition through pre-arrival and arrival orientation programs and events, as well as first-year experience programs and activities. OSL is also responsible for providing proactive educational programming for students by developing and delivering programs to advance UVic’s response to student mental health issues, sexualized violence awareness and prevention and in other areas that support under-represented student populations.Reporting to the Manager, New Student Engagement, the Student Engagement Coordinator works as part of a dynamic team to develop, implement and assess peer mentorship and engagement programming to support new students throughout their first year at UVic.Objectives:Led by institutional priorities while also centering student perspectives, and together with the New Student Engagement team, the Student Engagement Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of:
- Program design for the new student peer-mentor program
- Implementation of first year experience programming
- Frontline support and referrals for student mentors and mentees within the program
- Promotion and communications related to student engagement programming
- Management of surveys and assessment data
This position supports programs, initiatives and events that occasionally take place in the evenings or on the weekends and requires the ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.Job RequirementsThis position requires an Undergraduate Degree in a related field and 1-2 years of related experience in higher education or similar environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Knowledge of:
- Student leadership and student development theory including the particular needs of marginalized student groups
- Adult learning theory
- Curriculum development and pedagogy
- Social justice issues
- Online programming
- Campus and community resources
Experience:
- Leading/mentoring students
- Organizing large scale events and programs
- Developing and implementing co-curricular programming
- Working directly with students and student groups from diverse populations
In addition, this position requires:
- An ability to conduct and manage difficult conversations
- An ability to protect confidentiality
- Attention to detail and strong planning and organizational skills
- Demonstrated, strong interpersonal skills in a collegial environment
- An ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and effectively handle changing priorities
- A high level of professionalism, and ability to deal with sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy and compassion
- Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment
