Join the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) as a Steelhead Weir/Smolt Trap Technician supporting the Lower Snake River Steelhead Viable Salmonid Population (VSP) project and more!
In this role, you will assist the lead biologist in collecting, analyzing, and reporting critical data on Endangered Species Act (ESA)-listed steelhead populations.
Directly contribute to the project’s goals and WDFW’s mission of conservation by assessing fish population trends and recovery efforts.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Steelhead Weir/Smolt Trap Technician will,
Adult and Juvenile Salmonid Weir/Trap Construction, Installation, Maintenance, and Data Collection:
Data Entry and Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) of Juvenile and Adult trapping Data:
Working Conditions:
Work Setting, including hazards:
Schedule: Typically, 5 days per week, with non-standard hours during peak field seasons which may include working weekends, evenings and/or holidays and possible weeks exceeding 40 hours.
Travel Requirements: Daily travel is required from the duty station to the field sites using agency vehicles.
Tools and Equipment: Handheld power tools, chain saws, 4-Wheel Drive trucks, smolt traps, weirs, PIT Tag readers, and other common tools of the fisheries field.
Customer Interactions: Position may interact with the public or landowners during routine field trap checks, but these should be infrequent as most of the field work is conducted in a remote setting.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
