The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Forest Resilience Division. The Forest Resilience Division is responsible for the assessment, planning, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of forest health-related activities across all lands that work to restore and sustain the ecological functions of Washington’s forested landscapes. The Planning, Science, and Monitoring Section provides critical forest health insect and disease monitoring, technical assistance, and planning to analyze forest health and resiliency treatment needs statewide.

This position will serve as the technical expert for treatment monitoring at the project level and primary trainer for data collection protocols. This senior-level specialist is responsible for implementing forest health multi-party stand and project-level monitoring in support of the 20-Year Forest Health Strategic Plan Monitoring Framework in eastern Washington, the Forest Action Plan, and Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program (CFLRP) on United States Forest Service land ownership. This position will evaluate and manage unit-level monitoring projects on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest (OWNF), Colville National Forest (CNF), and other landownerships. This position will work collaboratively with relevant DNR staff, and federal, state, tribal, and external partners to coordinate, implement, and report findings from multi-party stand and project-level monitoring assessments of forest health conditions, including ecological outcomes from prescribed burning, mechanical treatment, and wildfire.

Most of this position’s work will be directed by US Forest Service staff on the OWNF and the CNF. This is a project position (limited duration with the potential for renewal or extension).

Responsibilities:

• Stand-level data collection on the OWNF and CNF in support of the 20-Year Forest Health Strategic Plan: Eastern Washington, Forest Action Plan, CFLRP, and the Forest Health Assessment and Treatment Framework.
• Stand-level data collection on private, state, municipal, and other landownerships in support of the 20-Year Forest Health Strategic Plan: Eastern Washington, Forest Action Plan, and the Forest Health Assessment and Treatment Framework.
• Stand-level monitoring protocol development, refinement, and training.
• Stand-level monitoring reporting – including data quality control and analysis.

Required Qualifications: 

• A Bachelor’s degree with a major study in natural resources (e.g. natural resource planning, forestry, landscape ecology, fire science, wildlife biology, geography), or a closely related field AND two years of professional work experience in natural resources planning, forest ecology, silviculture, fire science, landscape ecology, forest management, wildlife management, geography, or a closely related field relying on the required position knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors.
  OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Experience in forest health monitoring with at least 2 years of forestry monitoring.
• Experience with basic quality control of data, database management, and data analysis.
• Experience with geospatial software like ArcGIS or Survey123, and other related software to map and analyze natural resources.
• Understanding of forest health statistical analysis and sampling design.
• Demonstrated strong organizational and project management skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex natural resource issues to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting with internal staff and external partners.
