Host site details: Trout Unlimited Truckee, CA
Position Title: Sierra Outreach Assistant and Sierra Science Technician
Trout Unlimited (TU) is North America’s leading coldwater fisheries conservation organization. TU’s vision is that, by the next generation, trout and salmon will be restored throughout their native range. To accomplish this vision, TU works to protect, reconnect, and restore fish habitat and then sustain this work by building a diverse movement of businesses, people, and communities to support saving trout, salmon, and steelhead.
Trout Unlimited’s Outreach Mission is to bring together diverse interests to care for and recover rivers and streams so our children can experience the joy of wild and native trout and salmon. A key element of this work is engaging with our membership, local stakeholders, and community members in the places where you serve. This engagement takes several different forms and includes hosting volunteer projects, tabling at community events, running youth fishing opportunities, formal presentations, and more.
Key outreach messages include:
Trout Unlimited’s Inland Trout Program works across more than 50 restoration sites throughout the Sierra Nevada to improve habitat and long-term conditions for native fish. During the 2026 field season, project goals include completing pre- and post-project monitoring for established restoration sites and supporting the implementation of active restoration projects across the region.
Trout Unlimited SNAP members will aid the organization in achieving the goals stated above through a combination of field and office work. We are hiring two SNAP partners this upcoming field season. Their goals and projects will be similar, but weighting across tasks will differ depending on the position.
Key activities include: performing scientific protocols measuring surface water flow, groundwater depth, stream condition inventory, electrofishing surveys, the construction of process-based restoration structures (beaver dam analogs and post assisted log structures), wet/dry mapping, stream condition inventories, discharge measurements, groundwater well monitoring, and fish tagging and communicate information about restoration projects through the creation of fact sheets, presentations, and social media posts.
