We seek one motivated seasonal wildlife technician to assist the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute of FWC with monitoring nesting shorebirds in coastal Florida. We are looking to fill this position ASAP.

Focal shorebird species include American oystercatchers, least terns, and Wilson’s plovers. These shorebird breeding sites are accessible only by boat and host some of the highest concentrations of breeding oystercatchers in the state. The incumbent’s primary duties will involve working with a team to search via boat for breeding pairs, monitoring shorebird and seabird nests, banding of shorebirds, performing band re-sight surveys, disturbance surveys, predator tracking surveys, data entry, photo evaluation, and maintaining protected nesting habitat. The position is based in Gainesville, a small college town and home to the University of Florida. Salary for these positions is $18.50/ hour with a 40-hour work week. The ideal candidates would be available to start March 2026 and continue through September 2026 (exact start and end dates are flexible). Housing is provided for a small rental fee (~$150). Review of applications begins immediately and hiring will take place as soon as a qualified candidate is found.

Competitive Applicants will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Science, or a related field

  • Experience handling, banding and re-sighting birds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for communicating with the public and partners.
  • Proficiency operating boats and towing trailers (preferred but not required).
  • Ability to traverse through sandy and rocky substrate
  • Close attention to detail, excellent organization and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility with out of town travel
  • Willingness to work long days in the field (may include early mornings, late afternoons) in hot and humid weather conditions
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Valid driver’s license and experience with 4WD vehicles
