Course Number and Title: WGS436H1S – Advanced Topics in Women and Gender Studies: Prisons and Abolition

Course Description: This course offers a transnational perspective on prisons and abolition movements. Combining feminist approaches to carceral studies, psychology, and phenomenology, it centres human subjective experiences within – and in opposition to – local and global configurations of the prison industrial complex.

The delivery method for this course is currently 100% in person. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty of Arts and Science or the Women and Gender Studies Institute.

Salary:

$9,820.70 (Sessional Lecturer I);

$10,510.04 (Sessional Lecturer I Long Term);

$10,510.04 (Sessional Lecturer II);

$10,760.28 (Sessional Lecturer II Long Term);

$10,760.28 (Sessional Lecturer III)

$11,030.36 (Sessional Lecturer III Long Term);

includes vacation pay

Minimum Qualifications: Completed Ph.D. with a scholarly background in areas related to the specific course required.

Preferred Qualifications: Relevant lived experience and a blend of expertise in carceral studies and psychology as well as an emphasis on feminist abolition and global comparative approaches to carceral violence.

Description of Duties:

• Preparing the syllabus, reading list and lecture materials
• Delivering lectures
• Developing, marking and administering course assignments, tests and final assessments
• Holding regular office hours
• Communicating with students via email and Quercus
