Course description:

This course will explore how higher education institutions are transforming (or not) in an era of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) including teaching, research, service, administration and infrastructure, grounded in historical contexts of technology in post-secondary education more generally.

Through seminar-style discussions, a series of site visits, and invited guests, we will explore the impact of artificial intelligence on teaching, knowledge production, and institutional operations, raising questions about research ethics, authorship, reproducibility, and disciplinary norms, as well as finances, sustainability, mental health and policy, etc.

In the classroom, AI systems increasingly influence pedagogical design, assessment practices, academic integrity, adaptive feedback and student engagement. Higher education faces both unprecedented opportunities and complex challenges, which we will explore together. At the same time, we will also explore the growing impact of AI on institutional service and academic leadership, including faculty governance, committee work, communication practices, and strategic planning.

Each one of these topics would warrant its own full course, so this will be, by necessity, a survey course. However, by the end of the course, the goal will be to have participants equipped with enough core learning to begin to assess GenAI’s institutional implications and a grounding to explore specific topics in more detail, and develop informed strategies towards responsible implementation, and contribute thoughtfully to the future of higher education in an AI augmented world.

Minimum qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctorate in Higher Education or a related field; have a demonstrated record of scholarship in the field of Higher Education, educational technology, AI and the subject area of this course in a post-secondary setting; have practical experience related to the topic of the course in a post-secondary institution; and have teaching experience in the subject area of the course.
