Course number and title: JWB318H1F: The Art of Journalism: Literary Approaches to Reporting

Course description: Literary journalism approaches the journalistic craft as a literary endeavour. This important genre of journalism entails not merely telling true stories about the world around us but doing so in ways that captivate and engage a reader’s imagination, with all the nuance and precision that literary techniques can afford. This course will take up and consider canonical works of journalism from the last 75 years, discussing them as literary works as well as exploring the reporting methods they draw on and the ethical questions they raise. Students will have a choice of assignment tracks and either develop their own literary reporting projects or write analyses of the works we study.

Class schedule: Tuesdays 5:00pm – 8:00pm

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1st, 2025 to December 31st, 2025

Salary:

  • Sessional Lecturer 1 – $9,457.90 (includes 4% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term – $9,930.79 (includes 6% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer 2 – $10,121.77 (includes 6% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term – $10,326.62 (includes 6% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer 3 – $10,362.76 (includes 6% vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term – $10,570.02 (includes 6% vacation pay)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

  • MA in journalism or related field, or relevant professional experience
  • Industry experience as a working journalist or editor with an emphasis on literary journalism
  • At least 3 years of experience teaching

Preferred qualifications:

  • Publication record of journalism or creative writing
  • Demonstrated interest in pedagogy
  • Familiarity with the range of writing ability of undergraduates

Description of duties:

The Sessional Lecturer will teach the full course, conduct all grading, and prepare and submit all final marks. In addition, the Sessional Lecturer will hold office hours each week, and answer student questions by email and/or appointment.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
