INF2510H – Special Topics in ARM: De/Colonizing Archives

Course Description: This course interrogates the colonial legacy of archives which, through their close relationship to power, control how colonized groups are represented and understood within history. Across a variety of geographical contexts we will explore questions including, but not limited to: How do colonial archival institutions construct knowledge about their own narratives of empire and relations with colonized groups? How are these narratives sustained through archival practices of acquisition, appraisal, description, arrangement, and digitization? What is the ethical responsibility of the archivist in decolonization and to what extent do acts of repatriation and reparation further this goal? How do colonized groups mobilize their own indigenous and culturally specific epistemologies of recordkeeping and memory work in resistance? By focusing on the interplay of colonial domination and colonized resistance, this course brings a nuanced understanding to how documentary heritage is shaped within a complex terrain of archives, knowledge, and power.
