Description: Sessional Lecturer – ESS196H1S- Life and Death in the Solar System

Course number and title: ESS196H1S – Life and Death in the Solar System

Course description: Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to support life. Through directed readings, seminars, videos and lab visits, participants in this course will work with instructors whose own research tackles important questions concerning the origin of life on earth; the limits to life on this planet; implications for life under extreme conditions elsewhere in the solar system; and the life cycles of the planets themselves. The course will involve reading of scientific literature, student-led discussions, oral presentations and research projects, as well as potential field trips to sites in Southern Ontario. Restricted to first-year students. Not eligible for CR/NCR option. Breadth Category 5: The Physical and Mathematical Universes.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2025 to April 30, 2025 

Salary

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90

Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term: $9,930.79

Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,326.62

Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,570.02

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or a closely related field is required. In exceptional cases, a M.Sc. may be accepted. 

Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching geosciences at the university level will be an asset. 

Description of duties: Planning and delivering lectures; planning labs: developing and administering grading, course assignments, tests, and exams; supervising TA’s if any and providing scheduled office hours for academic counselling of students.
