Course Number and Title: ESS103H1F – Geology in Public Issues

Course description: Geologic hazards: earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, tsunamis. The distribution and politics of natural resources, including petroleum and ore deposits. Nuclear power and nuclear waste disposal. Global change: the geologic record of hot and cold climates, and how the earth survives. ESS103H1 is primarily intended as a science Distribution Requirement course for Humanities and Social Science. Distribution Requirements: Science; Breadth Requirements: The Physical and Mathematical Universes (5)

Estimated course enrollment: 300

Estimated TA support: 250 hours

Schedule: Online asynchronous with in-person final

Sessional dates: September 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025

Rate of pay: Stipend for 0.5FCE including vacation pay as of September 1, 2025:

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $10,510.04

Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.04

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,760.28

Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $11,030.36

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences or closely related discipline, knowledge of topic areas. Previous teaching experience at the university level will be a plus.

Description of duties: The lecturer will be responsible for effectively delivering the course with all of the attendant organizational issues of lecture and tutorial preparation and delivery, supervising of teaching assistants, setting, supervision and marking of exams, final course marks, course evaluations, providing scheduled office hours for academic counselling, and so forth.
