Course description:

This course investigates first-hand experiences and contributions of black students and teachers in the Canadian education system. Historical, systemic barriers to access will be studied along with current policy, practice and teaching pedagogies that aim to produce systems of education without oppression. By looking specifically at research focused on black schooling in Ontario, students will engage in policy analysis and assess current Afrocentric schooling models to assess effectiveness in eliminating educational inequality. Drawing on principles of equity and diversity, Afrofuturist scholarship will be emphasized and provide the framework that seeks to understand and investigate the past to better inform education’s future.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2026 to April 30, 2026

Salary:

Sessional Lecturer I – $9,820.70 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $10,510.04 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II – $10,510.04 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term – $10,760.28 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III – $10,760.28 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term – $11,030.36 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the ratesstated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in Education with expertise and specialization in Black Education.

Demonstrated background and professional experience (application and delivery) in the areas of equity, diversity ,cultural competency and/or policy with a focus on black education, black futurism, anti-racism and/or decolonizing practices are required.

Demonstrated excellence in teaching and pedagogy and demonstrated ability infusing the practice of teaching with current research are required.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience teaching this course, or a similar course at the university level is preferred.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.

Description of duties:

All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; out-of-class interactions with students via e-mail and office hours; development, administration and marking of assignments,tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; order all necessary readings; supervising TAs (if any) assigned to the course.
