Course Description

BTC2000H Effective Management Practices is a compulsory course that equips students with team and managerial skills, emphasizing real-world applications in the biotech sector. The course integrates:

  • Experiential learning through case studies, team-based exercises, and simulations
  • Leadership and organizational effectiveness principles and theories at a glance
  • Foundational management methodologies, drawing from references such as Harvard Business School case materials and key industry frameworks
  • Organizational behavior and team dynamics, emphasizing cross-functional collaboration
  • Personal development as an emerging leader, exploring the transition from technical expertise to managerial roles
  • Modern management and leadership practices, examining industry trends and evolving business models

The course is highly experiential and incorporates case studies, team-based exercises, simulations, and industry-relevant frameworks, including materials from Harvard Business School and other key sources.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Co-teaching the course alongside the lead adjunct professor, ensuring a dynamic and applied learning experience
  • Facilitating class discussions, team-based problem-solving, and experiential activities to reinforce key management principles
  • Providing mentorship and feedback to students on assignments and group projects
  • Ensuring the course remains aligned with industry trends, incorporating real-world biotech applications
  • Reviewing and evaluating student assignments, maintaining academic rigor and fairness
  • Integrating industry-relevant management frameworks, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical business acumen

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have extensive industry leadership experience to bring real-world applications to the course. Candidates should have:

  • Deep expertise and teaching interest in management, leadership, and organizational behavior
  • A strong background in strategic thinking and decision-making within the biotech industry
  • Experience in cross-functional leadership, including collaboration between R&D, commercial, and regulatory teams
  • A demonstrated interest in teaching and mentorship, with experience ias senior leadership experience in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or life sciences (preferred)
  • A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in leadership and education

A master’s or doctoral degree in a relevant field is preferred e.g. MBA; Extensive industry experience in executive roles will also be considered.

  • Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Estimated course enrolment: 55

Estimated TA support: 1hr/student

Class Schedule: Format: Hybrid (in-person and online components, dates are different each month),Commitment: Summer & Fall Terms, 2025 

Sessional Dates of Appointment: May 1st – December 31st, 2025

Salary: $8,633.87 (includes 4% vacation pay) each (hiring 2 50% SL)

Minimum Qualifications:

Description of Duties: All normal duties related to the design, teaching and delivery of a University credit course, including, but not limited to, Meeting with each student team to guide/advise them on their presentations. Holding office hours as required. Marking/evaluating student presentations and written examinations; recording student attendance; recording and submitting grades; and communicating with students on course-related matters for the Summer and Fall terms.
