Sessional Lecturer- BIO318H5 Y: Animal BehaviourCourse description: This course will cover the adaptive (evolved) behaviours of organisms that result from interactions with the biological environment. We ask why animals behave in a particular way, i.e. how does their behaviour enhance success in survival or reproduction? Examples involve adaptive strategies in competing with rivals, choosing mates, and avoiding parasites. We also ask how adaptive behaviour is controlled; what are the genetic, developmental, and physiological mechanisms underlying behaviour? Assignments involve observing and analyzing (suggesting alternative explanations/ hypotheses) for behaviour, followed by a use of these skills to critique a published scientific paper.Estimated course enrolment: 60Estimated TA support: 200 total hours- to be adjusted according to actual enrolmentClass schedule (tentative): Lecture Mon 13:00-15:00 check timetable https://ttb.utoronto.ca/ for the most up to date and complete informationSessional dates of appointment: Sep 1, 2025 to Dec 31, 2025Salary (0.5 FCE) (In accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement):Effective September 1, 2025:Sessional Lecturer I – $9,820.70Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $10,510.04Sessional Lecturer II – $10,510.04Sessional Lecturer II Long Term – $10,760.28Sessional Lecturer III – $10,760.28Sessional Lecturer III Long Term – $11,030.36All pay rates are inclusive of vacation pay. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.Qualifications: The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Biology or related field. The decision on hiring will be based on previous teaching experience in this course or other similar courses, academic qualifications, ability, and suitability for the position.Description of duties: Normal duties associated with teaching a university course, including preparation and delivery of course content, development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams, calculation and submission of grades, contact with students by regular office hours. Completion of all grades (may include make-up exams). This course will have in person lectures and practical sessions, and the position will include supervision of the day-to-day work of any Sessional Instructional Assistants or Teaching Assistants assigned to the course.
