Course Title: PHY146H5 • Principles of Physics I

Course Description: Physics is the scientific study of the laws governing all forms of matter and energy, from sub-atomic particles to stars and galaxies. The goal of physics is to develop physical laws based upon the results of experimental inquiry, and usually expressed in the language of mathematics, to predict phenomena within our natural world. This first course in classical physics is intended for students pursuing any of the Physics or Astronomy programs, although it is highly recommended for anyone in the Sciences. Topics include Newton’s Laws of motion, conservation of energy and momentum, inertia, circular motion, simple harmonic motion, waves and vibrations, thermal motion, and more.

Salary: Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70, including vacation pay. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in relevant area of Physics. Currency and mastery of subject area required as demonstrated by high-quality recent research experience (within the past four years), past teaching experience, and excellence in teaching a similar course. Applicants should demonstrate teaching excellence by providing documentation in the form of student surveys, letters, or other appropriate pieces of evidence. Excellent candidates otherwise considered to be equivalently qualified may be asked to present a sample lecture on a topic from the course, and performance in such a lecture will be considered important in the final assessment.

Description of Duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including but not limited to preparation and delivery of course content, development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and examinations, calculations and submission of grades, provide direction and supervision of TA’s, and holding regular office hours.
