Job DescriptionJob ID#:4584Job Category:Information TechnologyAn established organization in the energy sector is seeking a Senior UNIX Administrator to join its Information Technology department in a hybrid role based near Albany, NY. This is a full-time, permanent position offering an opportunity to support critical infrastructure operations and high-availability systems serving the electric grid across New York State.As a Senior UNIX Administrator, you’ll be responsible for managing a complex, multi-site UNIX/Linux server environment with a focus on system performance, integrity, automation, and compliance. This role plays a critical part in maintaining secure, reliable, and compliant IT operations-including disaster recovery planning, cloud integrations, and regulatory adherence. You’ll also lead or contribute to cross-functional project teams and provide mentorship to junior staff.Responsibilities of the Senior UNIX Administrator will include:
- Administer and maintain UNIX, Linux (RHEL), and VMware systems, including installation, patching, tuning, upgrades, and lifecycle management.
- Develop and implement high-availability and disaster recovery solutions across sites.
- Ensure systems meet regulatory standards (e.g., NERC CIP, SOC1), including documentation, access controls, and audit readiness.
- Automate server management tasks using tools such as Ansible and Red Hat Satellite.
- Lead and participate in troubleshooting, performance analysis, and root cause investigations.
- Work closely with infrastructure, development, and cybersecurity teams to support internal and external services.
- Maintain technical documentation and participate in strategic IT planning.
- Provide rotational 24/7 on-call support with rapid response expectations.
- Mentor junior team members and help define operational policies and best practices.
Job RequirementsQualifications of the Senior UNIX Administrator:
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in UNIX/Linux system administration in enterprise environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field preferred.
- Strong expertise in RHEL, IBM AIX, HP-UX, VMware (vCenter/ESXi), and automation tools like Ansible.
- Experience with regulatory compliance (NERC CIP, SOC1), IT audit processes, and security hardening (e.g., CIS benchmarks).
- Solid understanding of networking, SAN technologies, server clustering, and cloud-based infrastructure.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Active Directory and integration with UNIX/Linux platforms.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, business stakeholders, and vendors.
- Certifications such as RHCE, AIX, or HP-UX administration are highly desirable.
- Preferred Tools & Technologies: Cisco UCS, VMware vCenter, ESXi, Red Hat Satellite & Ansible Tower, IBM Power VM, Veritas InfoScale, Bash, Python or other scripting experience.
