About the Role: 

Reporting to the Manager, IT Infrastructure, the Senior Systems Administrator works with a team of system administrators responsible for the planning, implementation, maintenance, and support of the University’s Windows and Linux environments and provides support for Brock’s virtualized environment and private cloud infrastructure. The incumbent leads and participates in the design, configuration, testing, implementation, lifecycle management, and support activities for the enterprise systems and applications at Brock. 

The Senior Systems Administrator will: 

  • Install, configure, maintain, and performance tune the Windows Server and Redhat Linux operating system components, system software packages, and third party supplied applications, in a Hyper-V environment to satisfy operational and project objectives; 
  • Resolve tickets; 
  • Complete projects; 
  • Proactively address environment issues; 
  • Develop and maintain operational documentation, installation guides, hardening documents, test plans, processes, and procedures; 
  • Provide administration and support of system and organizational applications, both in-house developed and third party; 
  • Act as an administration resource for Technical Services initiated infrastructure projects and technical consultation for IT business projects; 
  • Keep systems and applications current and supported; 
  • Monitor systems for prevention of outages and high availability; 
  • Architect and monitor systems to ensure security and compliance with internal policies and external forces (e.g. PCI); 
  • Ensure systems are adequately backed up and recoverable to meet Recovery Time and Recovery Point objectives; 
  • Measure and report on key performance indicators; and 
  • Actively incorporate equity, diversity, and inclusion concepts and initiatives into all aspects of operational tasks and daily work responsibilities.

Key Skills and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or the equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered; 
  • Experience as a Windows and Linux Systems Administrator in a mixed environment of medium (10-50 servers) to large (greater than 50 servers) size enterprise IT infrastructure environment; 
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems involving Windows/Linux operating systems; 
  • Working knowledge of Windows operating systems 2012/2022; 
  • Practical experience administering Active Directory; 
  • Working knowledge of operating system installation, administration, capacity planning and systems management; 
  • Ability to lead a team through a system development lifecycle; 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a diverse team; 
  • Daily contact with university faculty & staff to understand requirements, coordinate activities and communicate project risks, progress and decisions; 
  • Promotes and embodies inclusivity and respect within the workplace and the broader community; 
  • Strong organizational and problem determination skills; 
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing demands and client groups; 
  • Accountable for the security, integrity and recoverability of IT systems; 
  • Ability to analyze problems, research possible solutions, and identify lingering issues. 

Please note: This position will be required to work on-site and be available for on-call after hours/weekend support. 

Preferred or Asset Skills: 

  • Experience with Sharepoint; 
  • Experience with in an HA, clustered, virtual environment; 
  • Excellent knowledge of TCP/IP stack and network architecture and services; 
  • Experience with RedHat Linux; 
  • Experience with SAN and NAS environments, ISCSI and Fiber Channel; 
  • Experience configuring and administering various web servers (IIS, Apache, etc) and Apache Tomcat; 
  • Experience with one or more scripting languages (PHP, Perl, Bash, etc); 
  • Experience or working knowledge of following software components: MS-SQL, MySQL, SCOM, Cisco UCS; 
  • Experience with PCI-DSS compliance; 
  • Experience in MS Exchange administration; 
  • Experience with MS System Center Suite; 
  • Experience with incident, problem and change management; and 
  • ITIL and/or project management experience. 

Salary and Total Rewards: 

  • Job Grade N, Salary Scale ($75,460-$129,360); 
  • Target Hiring Range: $75,460-$95,000 
  • This is a permanent position that includes: 
  • Health & Dental Benefits: Comprehensive extended health, dental, and vision coverage. 
  • Pension Plan: Enrollment eligibility in the Brock University Pension Plan. 
  • Vacation: Up to 3 weeks per year, in addition to university holidays.

  • The final salary is based on experience, internal equity, and budget considerations within the target hiring range.
