Recognizing that Black, Indigenous, and other Racialized communities have experienced inequities that have developed historically and are ongoing, we strongly welcome and encourage candidates from those communities to apply.Your opportunity:Reporting directly to the Manager, Accounting & Processing Support, the Senior Research Accountant will work closely with the Division of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation, Office of the Vice-Principal Research & Innovation (OVPRI) at UTSC, Academic Departments and Procurement Services to develop relationships and create efficiencies to support research activity at UTSC.The Senior Research Accountant will oversee and assist with financial reporting, compliance, and management of intricate research projects. These responsibilities include troubleshooting and reconciling financial reports to aid Business Officers and PIs in preparing internal and external financial statements and reports and managing relationships and requirements of internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, they are accountable for ensuring adherence to and compliance with financial guidelines and requirements specified by sponsors and/or University policies.The Senior Research Accountant will develop and implement new financial and non-financial processes with appropriate stakeholders to support the standardization and effectiveness of business processes for administering research grants. This role provides support and consultation services to Principal Investigators (PIs) and Business Officers through workshops, budget monitoring, and assistance in preparing complex reports for stakeholders.Your responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as a resource by providing oversight and support for research projects
  • Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for research agreements
  • Analyzing actual expenditures in comparison to budget and preparing reports for financial planning and funding terms compliance
  • Producing complex reports involving statistical and/or financial information and identifying and resolving data anomalies and discrepancies
  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
  • Analyzing current processes and procedures and recommending improvements as appropriate
  • Keeping well-informed on key University and sponsor policies and trends
  • Additional duties as required

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or a related field. An acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum five years of related financial and accounting experience, preferably in a university setting.
  • Experience managing audits with a strong understanding of auditing practices and procedures, including developing and implementing risk management strategies and internal controls
  • Strong budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting skills required
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suites and Financial Information Systems with the ability to develop and produce complex statistical and/or financial reports
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to identify and resolve issues within a changing, high-pressure environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Working knowledge of research granting agencies and their programs is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with grants and research accounts is highly preferred.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 14 — $90,056. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $115,169. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
