Job Description:Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.At Metrolinx, equity, diversity and inclusion are essential to living our values of serving with passion, thinking forward and playing as a team.Our Strategic Communications Office is seeking a Senior Advisor, Media Relations & Issues to lead provision of accurate and effective communications and enhance relations with GO Transit’s stakeholders (e.g. customers, the general public, and employees).What will I be doing?

  • Development and implementation of media and issues management strategies that reflect corporate objectives including:
  • Developing messaging for reactive requests from media and working cross-functionally to ensure divisional alignment on corporate responses.
  • Identifying potential risks / issues and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Developing proactive media engagement materials, including proactive pitches.
  • Building external and internal awareness of the corporation and its services.
  • Analyzing and interpreting information gathered internally to ensure final communications products are clearly understandable by the intended audience while meeting divisional objectives.
  • Providing analysis of tone, sentiment and reach of media coverage across the corporation.
  • Verifying information in media coverage to ensure it is correct, timely and representative of the corporation.
  • Supporting the Senior Manager, Media Relations and Issues Management, with media events, speaking opportunities and interviews as well as briefings of senior leadership members in advance of these events.
  • Providing media engagement advice to other teams within the division on events and upcoming milestones.
  • Liaising with the Ministry of Transportation and Minister’s Office on issues and media responses.
  • Liaising with other transit agencies and/or transit partners on issues and media responses as required.
  • Provides effective public relations management, including issues and crisis management. This includes advising and communicating during major incidents or crises.
  • Provides 24/7 on-call support to the corporation on a rotating basis.
  • Provides media and issues management support services to all levels of staff, including senior management and the Board, and develops and produces material such as issues notes, key messages, and other materials as required.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Completion of a diploma in Communications or related field or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in communications and/or media relations including the administration and communication of informational, promotional, and public relations material
  • Complete proficiency in the English language is essential to facilitate high profile public communications.
  • Knowledge of issues management and print and multimedia production.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate communications and perform media cost analyses.
  • Organizational, diplomacy, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to effectively advise on media engagement approaches cost effectively and to tight deadlines.
  • Must be proficient in the use of word processing applications (e.g. MS Word, desktop publishing and web site authoring applications).
  • Diplomacy and oral/written communication skills to respond to news media enquiries and act as corporate spokesperson.
