These are opportunities to gain valuable field experience in fisheries management within the Grays Harbor basin.
Envision yourself assisting the Region 6 – District 17 area fish biologist in collecting vital data, which is essential for effective collaboration with tribal, federal, and private organizations to exchange critical fishery and escapement data.
As part of our team, you’ll have the opportunity to provide critical support by gathering data that will be used to assess fish stock status, build fishery models, and forecast salmon and steelhead returns – crucial for North of Falcon meetings.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Salmonid Spawning Ground Surveyor will,
Conduct Salmonid Spawner Surveys to estimate natural spawning escapement in the Grays Harbor basin:

Work Setting, including hazards:
Schedule: 40 hours per week, 24/7 non-scheduled; weekend, holiday and evening work may be required. Work hours are flexible due to inclement weather, stream flow patterns, access, fishing schedules, and fish densities. Hours over 40 per week accrues as overtime or comp time.
Travel Requirements: Except for onboard observer sampling programs, there is no overnight work.
Tools and Equipment: Raft, pontoon, drift, jet pump outboard equipped sled, raingear, waders, wading shoes raincoat, Personal Floatation Device (PFD), Polaroid glasses, GPS unit, WDFW hat, and other survey gear will be provided.
Customer Interactions: Develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, the public, landowners, field technicians, and biologists from either State, Federal, tribal tribes, or public and private organizations to promote cooperative work and to exchange information.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Certifications/Licenses:
Valid unrestrictive driver’s license.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.
