Position InformationJob Title Rector
Job DescriptionThe Rector serves as the primary pastoral leader, chief administrator, community builder and University resource for one of 32 single-sex undergraduate halls. The Rector has the unique responsibility to foster Christian community within a residential community, inspired and informed by Notre Dame’s Catholic, Holy Cross tradition.This position is responsible for the well-being and development of residents, including members of Hall Staff, and assists students in the integration of their intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual formation.The current Rector cohort includes priests of the Congregation of Holy Cross, individuals from other religious orders, and single lay women and men. The Rector position is a live-in, full time position, which is 10 months in the undergraduate halls (with new Rectors arriving early for orientation and training). The position offers full-time benefits, including a retirement plan, a furnished apartment (available for 12 months) and a meal plan during the academic year.The Rector position can be categorized into 4 main areas:PASTORAL LEADER:
– Practicing Catholic who serves as an active and visible witness to Catholic identity, mission and values
– Serve as active witness of a committed Christian
– Ensure opportunities for vibrant Catholic worship
– Collaborate to design opportunities to integrate faith
– Establish a “ministry of presence”
– Provide pastoral care and counseling
– Meet 1:1 with first year students
– Reach out to marginalized or vulnerable students
– Mediate conflict resolution among residents and with parents
– Employ crisis management with students of concern
– Implement discipline consistent with University standardsCHIEF ADMINISTRATOR:
– Attend meetings for supervision and professional development
– Partner with Housing Operations to complete assignments
– Recruit, train, coach, mentor and develop residential staff
– Participate in the annual Hall Staff Formation
– Design hall specific training for Hall Staff
– Serve in a rotation of three Head Staff on duty per hall
– Create policies and procedures for the residential community
– Oversee stewardship of finances
– Collaborate on repair/maintenance of the facility
– Write letters of recommendations for residentsCOMMUNITY BUILDER:
Know all residents by name
– Provide opportunities for Hall Staff team bonding
– Conduct regular town hall meetings
– Establish expectations for RAs to conduct section meetings
– Create opportunities to interact informally with residents
– Develop in-hall orientation program to welcome new students
– Reach out in intentional ways to disconnected students
– Create opportunities to highlight and celebrate diversity
– Support development of signature events unique to each hall
– Design programming aimed at integrated development
– Collaborate with Priest-in-Residence and/or Faculty-in-ResidenceUNIVERSITY RESOURCE:
Serve as the liaison for faculty, staff and parents
– Acquire and enhance understanding of University resources
– Communicate information and make referrals for residents
– Collaborate with Student Affairs departments and critical
University partners
– Share information with the Deputy Title IX Coordinator
and CARE Team as needed
– Accumulate data and compile reports
– Serve as a member of annual task groups or committees
