description of Duties:
The Youth Crew Leader position is an opportunity to make a difference in high school youths’ lives while completing conservation projects on public and private lands. Leaders will be mentors, educators, and facilitators for high school youth working to promote the health and resiliency of our land, air, and water.
This position is part of a partnership between CCNC and local land managers and community partners in the Raleigh and Durham area to deliver the Youth jobshiringnearme.org Corps program. The Youth Crew Leader position requires patience, a consistently positive mental attitude, mentorship, technical aptitude, focus on efficiency, and a high level of competence in the outdoors. It also involves an administration role, where weekly paperwork is due in a timely manner to supervisors. Finally, crew leaders must exhibit the ability to effectively work on diverse teams and those from a variety of populations and communities.
Crews will complete trail and land stewardship projects throughout the Raleigh or Durham area, working in urban parks, greenways, and on a mix of public and private lands. This role requires comfort supporting youth in active urban environments, including maintaining strong situational awareness and helping participants navigate environmental and site-specific hazards in a calm and proactive way. The goal is to create a safe, supportive, and growth-focused environment where young people can challenge themselves, develop new skills, and see the real impact of their work in their own community.
Standard youth crew schedule consists of working Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with evenings and weekends off.
All Youth Crew Leaders will complete two weeks of paid training from June 1st – June 12th before leading two separate youth crew sessions.
Session I: June 15th – July 3rd
Break Week: July 6th – July 10th
Session II: July 13th – August 7th
There will be a one-week break between sessions for both Crew Leaders and participants. Depending on project timelines and partner needs, some positions may run for 6 weeks, concluding as early as July 31st.
Responsibilities:
In this role, the Crew Leader will guide and support a team of up to six high school–aged youth, ages 15–18, through CCNC’s Youth jobshiringnearme.org Corps program. Leading a youth crew requires a higher level of supervision, structure, and day-to-day coaching than working with young adult crews.
