Public Programs Coordinator

JOB SUMMARY: Are you a passionate environmental education professional ready to ignite curiosity and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards? Join our team as the Public Programs Coordinator and lead the way designing and executing New Hampshire Audubon’s public environmental education initiatives. Stepping into this role will place you at the heart of NH Audubon’s education department with programs ready to run and others yet to be designed by your creative mind. Lead birding outings, curate and host intriguing guest lecture series, and facilitate interactive and experiential learning opportunities for all ages. This role requires a balance of both administrative acumen and a passion for teaching in the field.

TITLE: Public Programs Coordinator

LOCATION: McLane Center – Concord, NH

HOURS: 35 hours per week, full-time, hourly position.  

SCHEDULE: Days & hours vary according to programming schedule, but mostly between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. Schedule will include some evenings and weekends.

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by schedule, coordinating, and ensuring delivery of high-quality environmental education programming to the public. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Provide high-quality environmental education experiences for preK-12 youth, adult, and family audiences in a variety of settings. Specific responsibilities including but not limited to: 

• Develop, market, coordinate, host, and facilitate environmental education programs for youth, adult, and family audiences on a regular basis
  Specific programs include but are not limited to:
  • Wee Explorers at Brockway Nature Preserve in Hopkinton, NH
  • Birding Outings throughout the state of New Hampshire
  • The Newfound Nature Series of lectures at Paradise Point Nature Center
  • Guided hikes at NH Audubon Centers and Wildlife Sanctuaries
  • Biannual Pelagic Birding Outing out of Rye Harbor
  • Live animal presentations
• Create and maintain adaptable lesson plans for programs delivered using NH Audubon’s lesson template
• Consistently solicit program evaluation from participants to systematically improve teaching methods to achieve learning outcomes
• Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations through joint programming and collaboration
• Support volunteers within the Education department to maintain and improve program quality and participant satisfaction
• Serve as a Birdability Captain to facilitate accessible opportunities in participatory science projects
• Support the facilitation of NH Audubon educational activities as needed at Centers and at off-site programming in collaboration with other members of the Education Department, including but not limited to school programming & day camp programming
• Provide staff support for major NH Audubon events (as well as community-based events)
• Represent NH Audubon at tabling events to promote programs, recruit volunteers and seasonal staff, and share our mission with the public
• Performing other duties as assigned

LEADERSHIP: Reports to the Director of Education

Expected to work in indoor & outdoor settings with varied terrain. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education: Some higher education coursework in Environmental Education, Natural Science, or Business Administration required. Bachelor’s degree in those or other applicable subjects preferred. 

experience: Three to five years environmental education and/or business administration experience including program and event facilitation experience with demonstrated ability to make independent and coordinated decisions is required. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience working within budgets. Supervisory skills and the ability to work effectively within a diverse community are necessary. Interpretive and public speaking experience is required. Knowledge of natural sciences is preferred, especially in ornithology, ecology, biology, geology, or other related fields; advanced birding experience is highly preferred. Previous animal handling experience is desired but can be trained. Experience with volunteer recruitment and retention is desirable.

Must have the ability to independently prioritize and complete work tasks on time in a complex and dynamic workflow while maintaining a positive attitude, excellent customer service skills, and a professional and courteous manner. Must pass a criminal background check.

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: requires standing, stretching, bending, walking, lifting 50 lbs. Must be able to climb stairs and navigate outdoor trails which includes steep and rocky terrain, lake environment as well as be physically and mentally capable of performing multiple tasks under pressure and be able to function in a fast paced indoors and diverse outdoors environment. Ability to participate in moderately active programming including hiking, kayaking, and canoeing as necessary.

COMPENSATION: $19-21 per hour, commensurate with experience.
