What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $21 per hour. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

This is a limited position with an expected end date of one year from date of hire.

Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site 3 days per week and off-site as needed. This is a hybrid position, but employees will be expected to be in the office at least 3 days per week and as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days. The work schedule for this position will be adjusted as needed for field activities.

What You’ll Do

Denver’s Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) is dedicated to advancing Denver’s environmental and public health goals. DDPHE works collaboratively with city, state and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to promote healthy people, healthy pets, and a sustainable environment. DDPHE oversees a number of services related to public health and the environment and is comprised of six divisions: Division of Shared Services and Business Operations; Community & Behavioral Health; Public Health Investigations; Denver Animal Protection; the Office of Medical Examiner; and Environmental Quality. DDPHE is building a more representative workforce that reflects the diversity of Denver communities. We have one Public Health AmeriCorps members / Community Health Worker Apprentice positions available for those interested in exploring a career in public and/or environmental health. Through supportive on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction using in-person and virtual formats, the successful candidates will gain the skills and knowledge needed to advance into a public health career. Certain requirements are required to be completed within a 1-year on-the-job training period.

Specifically, in this role, you will:

  • Researching odor issues as part of potential future regulatory actions.
  • Support community outreach to individuals, communities, service providers, and groups.
  • Support water quality report development.
  • As part of our field work, provide seasonal assistance for water quality testing (lakes and streams).
  • As part of our field work, provide seasonal assistance for mosquito control.
  • Support other Environmental Quality sections by providing compliance assistance to regulated entities.
  • Make recommendations to management on environmental protection matters.
  • Build professional relationships and networks with our various City and external partners.
  • Keeps routine records, writes reports, and completes forms.
  • Complies with standard safety rules and procedures. Learns the industry standards, regulatory standards, operational processes, and other guiding professional practices.
  • Along with all department staff, this position will actively participate on an emergency preparedness and response team to support DDPHE’s responsibilities outlined in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan. This may require being ‘on-call’ from time to time to help respond to emergencies. Additional training commensurate with assigned duties will be provided.

This position will be assigned to our Environmental Quality Division team. See information below about the role/division.

  • Environmental Quality (EQ): This position will contribute to a variety of air and water protection initiatives within DDPHE’s Environmental Quality Division. This role is focused on improving air quality, educating the public, supporting local policy development, and assisting with water quality monitoring. The ideal candidate will possess strong research and community engagement skills, as well as a passion for environmental protection. Please consider this prior to applying.
  • Key Responsibilities for this role:
  • Air Quality Projects: Support initiatives focused on improving air quality in Denver. This includes matters related to the impacts of odor, public education efforts on clean air and health, along with supporting community outreach. through the Love My Air Network at clinics and schools.
  • Policy Support: Conduct research on air quality and nuisance odor control to inform and support local policy initiatives. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to establish new best practices for air quality management in Denver.
  • Water Quality Monitoring: Participate in water sampling activities at local streams, conducting tests for safety indicators such as E. coli and other potential contaminants.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with residents and local organizations to promote awareness of air and water protection efforts. Provide outreach materials and participate in events to strengthen public understanding of environmental quality issues.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate. Must enroll in a recognized apprentice program.
  • Experience Requirement: 18 years of age or older.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of peer support or related job experience or volunteer work may be substituted for the high school education.
  • License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver’s License at the time of application.
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Requirements to be completed after hiring:

  • Within 5 days of being hire, register with local Workforce Center at Connecting Colorado or update registration if currently registered with Connecting Colorado and email DDPHE verifying you have completed or updated registration with Connecting Colorado.
  • Within 45 after being hired, complete Apprenticeship Agreement and submit to Apprenticeship Sponsor. DDPHE will assist with completion of Apprenticeship Agreement and submitting paperwork to the Apprenticeship Sponsor.
  • Other mandatory requirements to be completed after hire.
