General Internship Expectations

The Phoenix Conservancy (TPC) is hiring for paid internship positions for the fall 2026 season. Interns for TPC will receive direct experience and training with restoration, conservation, and social enterprise work through restoring endangered ecosystems, environmental outreach and communication, and participating in the dynamic growth of a young conservation nonprofit. 

As a rapidly growing international conservation organization, we offer diverse experience opportunities emphasizing different aspects of our organization’s work, both in an online and fieldwork context. 

To complete an internship, interns for The Phoenix Conservancy are expected to complete the following expectations, with training from TPC staff:

Experience Length: Complete 135 hours of cumulative work in their position 

Professionalism: Meet with their TPC supervisor occasionally to check in on progress and attend TPC’s all-staff meetings

Breadth of Experience: Participate in at least 1 TPC project outside the scope of their specific role to increase experience breadth. This may include participation in field trips to other project sites, participation in website or social media development, project development, research, or a capstone project in line with TPC and an individual’s interests.

As a result of these standards, former interns are extremely competitive when applying for jobs after the completion of their internships. References and experiences gained from The Phoenix Conservancy have been cited as a direct reason by employers that former TPC interns were selected for jobs, some of which had more than 200 applicants. We therefore place high priority on the professional development of interns into high-quality, self-directed conservation professionals with diverse, valuable skill sets. Within The Phoenix Conservancy, applicants completing internships with higher levels of autonomy and responsibility may be invited to move into higher levels within the organization based on their performance. 

These internships are largely field-based, with a minimum of 135 hours logged in active restoration field work. To be considered for a field-based internship position, candidates therefore should:

• Be physically located in the vicinity of Pullman, WA and able to work in the field in this region
• Have reliable local transportation to travel within the city
• Have some field experience through a combination of classwork, volunteer work, or other life experience
• Be self-directed and able to competently work independently and under the supervision and direction of a field crew lead

MORE POSITION DETAILS

Paid Internships (3+ fall positions available)

Pay: $2000 stipend, paid upon completion

Position Type: Part-time (16-24 hrs/wk)

Start Date: week of Sept 28th or Oct 5th (exact start date flexible)

End Date: Dependent on hours/week worked; no more than 12 weeks from start date (although exceptions can be made for extenuating circumstances). So with a Sept 28th start, an intern would need to complete hours by Dec 28th 

Position description: The Phoenix Conservancy is pleased to offer paid internships for fall 2026, with the primary responsibility of assisting with all aspects of Palouse Prairie restoration. Paid internships are designed to be both more concentrated and shorter in duration to increase accessibility of conservation careers to driven individuals. In addition to the general internship expectations above, paid internship positions carry the expectation of a minimum 16 hours per week and a maximum of 24 hours per week, as available. 

Field Internship Specific Duties:

• Seeding and planting of native species at Phoenix Conservancy restoration sites
• Invasive species control and removal at Phoenix Conservancy restoration sites
• Horticulture, relocation, and seed collection of native plant species
• Assisting with special events, fundraisers, and other TPC activities
• Attending meetings with their TPC supervisor, and adhering to all general employee expectations for The Phoenix Conservancy.
• Regular field work in assisting with all aspects of Palouse Prairie restoration, including TPC’s Pocket Prairie Restoration

Depending on needs and availability, the position may also assist with aspects of other TPC restoration projects. Sample duties may include (but are not limited to): 

• Data management and organization tasks, as assigned
• Outreach and education materials development
• Biochar production and training, including assisting with carbon accreditation
• Social enterprise development and participation as a funding vehicle for conservation
