The Department of Orthopaedics is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to investigate innovative techniques for sports monitoring using advanced wearable sensors and analytical methods. The UBC Department of Orthopaedics has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Our mission is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve musculoskeletal health for the community at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Department consists of seven clinical divisions and a division of orthopaedic research, and is comprised of 200+ academic and clinical faculty who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to advance knowledge in the areas of clinical orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering and related basic science areas. This focus allows the Department to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in the areas of minimally invasive joint replacement, improved bone healing, advanced techniques in spinal surgery, innovative arthroscopic techniques, and improved biomaterials and implants.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be recruited by the UBC Department of Orthopaedics under the supervision of Dr. Babak Shadgan, Assistant Professor and Director of the Implantable Biosensing Laboratory, and Dr. Ali Bashashati, Assistant Professor at the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering. The PDF will primarily work at ICORD (www.icord.org), with periodic work conducted in selected laboratories at the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering. The PDF will collaborate with a team of researchers, technicians, and students in the lab.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Dr. Babak Shadgan and Dr. Ali Bashashati, the incumbent will be responsible for:

• Undertake and support all research activities related to the development and application of an optical monitoring technology, system and sensor, based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and other biosensors including EMG.
• Leverage wearable sensors to develop novel assessments of cardiorespiratory function and skeletal muscle metabolism during exercise and recovery.
• Oversee the collection, processing, and analysis of physiological data from recreational and elite athletes across various exercise protocols.
• Utilizing machine learning and deep learning algorithms, integrate multi-modal physiological data to generate innovative body and muscle fitness parameters
• Manage documentation, preparing reports and publications, and ensuring effective communication with technical collaborators, industry partners, and regulatory agencies
• Support and mentor staff and students working in the lab.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful applicants will have:

• Resident of British Columbia or willing to relocate
• PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering or similar.
• Outstanding programming skills in MATLAB, JAVA, Net, Python and R.
• Track record of developing and implementing novel machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms in healthcare, exercise sciences, or other spaces.
• Extensive experience in utilizing ML libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Scikit-learn.
• Familiarity with cloud computing and AI frameworks.
• Extensive experience working on one or more areas: image processing, machine learning, time series, digital health, bio-signal processing, and wearable sensors.
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
• Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The expected salary range for this position is $60,000 to $75,000 per annum. The Faculty of Medicine is committed to offering equitable and competitive salaries, commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
