The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the management of daily departmental operations, environment, and work processes according to standard operating procedures. Coordinates and directs the activities of all personnel within assigned section. Develops work plan and priorities employing established policies and procedures to ensure timely and accurate completion of assignments. Ensures department procedures and processes meet all regulatory compliance. May function in a technical capacity within the scope of licensure, as appropriate, to meet patient care needs. The Laboratory Supervisor position includes staff supervisory and administrative responsibilities, including training, oversight and evaluation of employees and laboratory operations. Is responsible for meeting regulatory operational standards and creating related procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Supervises the Pathology department to ensure the effective operation of the department. Coordinates the activities of the technical and support staff assigned and provides technical expertise and guidance, as needed, ensuring that all technical and administrative processes are completed in a timely manner and as per standard operating procedure.
  • Supervises and reviews the work product of the technical and support staff.
  • Reviews for accuracy and completeness documents and records related to specimen documentation for specimen submission to referring laboratory.
  • Develops and implements standard operating procedures ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Functions in a technical capacity and performs functions within licensure scope of practice, as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Operating Room, Radiology and Endoscopy to ensure appropriate resources are allocated and available for minimally invasive procedures requiring Pathology participation and consultation.
  • Oversees staff training and competencies to ensure successful completion as per regulatory requirements.

  • Provides leadership, training and support for staff by establishing performance expectations and providing constructive feedback to reorganize and/or improve positive performance.

  • Implements policies and procedures in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Human Resources:
  • Actively works to improve the working environment to aid in the retention of staff.
  • Ensures proper orientation for all new hires.
  • Supports and participates in Hospital recognition programs.
  • Completes initial and annual performance appraisals within the required time frames.
  • Staff Development:
  • Provides ongoing training to staff to ensure processes are followed in a consistent and effective manner and in accordance with standard operating procedure.
  • Ensures employee competency by providing ongoing staff development and continuing education.
  • Quality Improvement:
  • Participates in the Laboratory Quality Management Program and Safety Committee meetings.
  • Prepares documentation and participates in audits and document reviews for quality improvement.
  • Implements and monitors quality improvement initiatives to meet established goals.
  • Day to day supervision of performance of technical and support staff, monitoring laboratory processes to include review of quality control, equipment maintenance and other quality assurance activities, assuring all remedial action is taken when systems deviate from performance specifications.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE: 

  • 4+ years of experience post NYS Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Histotechnician or Cytotechnologist.

EDUCATION:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Life Sciences, Medical Technology or related degree or substantial equivalence as per New York State Education Department OR meets one of the grandparenting requirements for licensure as a or Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Histotechnologist or Cytotechnologist.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • A current New York State Education Department License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Histotechnologist or Cytotechnologist, required.
