At North York General, our team is making a world of difference.Position SummaryThe Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse in the extended class (EC), who possesses the competencies to autonomously diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals, and perform procedures within their legislated scope of practice. The Nurse Practitioner exhibits advanced knowledge, skills, and judgment in providing patient care that aligns with the current College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards for Nurse Practitioners and the competencies defined by the Canadian Nurses Association for Nurse PractitionersAs the NP, you will deliver specialized and advanced nursing care, including virtual services, for patients admitted to the Orthopaedic service and collaborate with the associated ambulatory areas such as TJAC, Pre-Op, Orthopaedic/Plastic clinic, and the Emergency Department within an interprofessional team model. You will provide leadership and be responsible for the promotion and enhancement of Orthopaedic Surgery care across the health care continuum. You will integrate research into practice, to ensure best practice standards are maintained and incorporated into clinical initiatives. You will collaborate with the interprofessional team and primary care providers to assist patients and their families in navigating the health care continuum. This involves conducting comprehensive nursing assessments and consultations with orthopedic patients and families with complex needs across various clinical programs and settings. Additionally, you will work with program leaders and staff to develop, implement, and evaluate best practices in orthopaedic care. A key focus will be on providing leadership to promote awareness and understanding of Orthopaedic Surgery through initiating and participating in professional and organizational activities. This aims to advance nursing practice and enhance patient care outcomes in the field of Orthopaedic surgical care. This NP role will support the Vision, Mission, and Strategic Direction of the hospital and the GTA Rehab Network/Rehabilitative Care AllianceOn a practical level, you will

  • Utilizes a strong clinical knowledge base to assess patients’ physical, psychosocial, and medical status through comprehensive history-taking and advanced physical assessments, formulates diagnoses, and develops and implements individualized treatment plans to address the identified needs of patients and families in the Orthopaedic program.
  • Assumes a leadership role in influencing clinical practice and patient outcomes, and collaborates with the broader health care team and community partners regarding complex patient care situations
  • Lead and influence clinical practice and patient outcomes by collaborating with the healthcare team and community partners to address complex patient care situations.
  • Plays a key role in quality improvement activities and policy/procedure development, relevant to Orthopaedic Surgical Care
  • Integrates research into practice to ensure best practice standards are maintained.
  • Initiates and participates in professional and organizational activities to improve and advance nursing practice in the area of surgical care
  • Creates, utilizes, and/or disseminates new nursing knowledge

Qualifications

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class in good standing
  • Master’s prepared in nursing or equivalent
  • CNA certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing an asset
  • Certification in Hospital and Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners (or equivalent) an asset
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations (i.e. NPAO, RNAO) an asset.
  • Eligibility for cross appointment with Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto or another academic institution
  • Minimum 3-5 years of diverse clinical and leadership experience as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class
  • 3 – 5 years surgical experience in acute care nursing preferred
  • Orthopaedic Surgery experience preferred
  • Experience with Hip and Knee Replacement, Hip Fracture and Shoulders Quality-Based Procedures (QBP)

  • Computer based literacy in word processing and database management
  • Working knowledge of the College of Nurses of Ontario standards of practice
  • Demonstrated and ongoing commitment to continuing professional development
  • Experience in clinical research and formal teaching experience
  • Evidence of program design and resources development skills
  • Excellent practice program development, project management and report writing skills
  • High level of initiative, works independently, and able to effectively lead project teams to achieve outcomes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evaluation methodologies. Support and participate in ongoing program development and quality improvement initiatives
  • Bilingualism in French/English an asset.
