Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Safety Analyst to work on our Environment, Safety, Health and Quality team. Our team works a 4×10 schedule located out of our Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) facility in Idaho with every Friday off.
At Idaho National Laboratory, you’ll prepare and maintain nuclear facility safety basis documents including documented safety analyses and technical safety requirements, execute unreviewed safety question processes, and conduct facility hazard classifications and accident analyses. You’ll review facility modifications for nuclear safety compliance, interface with researchers, project managers, and operations teams to keep safety basis projects on schedule, and ensure high-quality products are submitted to DOE for timely review and approval.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Support and implement the Nuclear Safety Program, which includes requirements management, identifying and implementing improvements to current procedures and processes, performing programmatic assessments, and conducting Laboratory-wide training associated with nuclear safety requirements.
  • Responsible for 10 CFR 830 by performing nuclear facility safety analyses observing with DOE regulatory and company quality standards.
  • Prepare and maintain nuclear facility safety basis documents, including documented safety analysis (DSA) and technical safety requirements (TSRs). Support implementation of the new and revised DSAs and TSRs for nuclear facilities to ensure that TSRs and DSA commitments are adequately implemented in facility procedures.
  • Develop controls that are both effective and most easily executed by operations.
  • Ensure high-quality, technically defensible products are submitted to the DOE for review and approval.
  • Provide technical peer reviews for new and revised technical products, principally nuclear facility DSAs and TSRs.
  • Support project execution activities which include reviews of routine and abnormal operating procedures and operational events or design activities with respect to the facility safety basis.
  • Review facility modifications and long-range planning to ensure nuclear safety requirements are met.
  • Execute the unreviewed safety question (USQ) process for proposed facility and procedure changes.
  • Execute the safety-in-design process for new nuclear facilities or major modifications.
  • Conduct facility hazard classification, hazard identification, assessment, accident analyses, facility categorization, and safety system classification.
  • Interface and build relationships with front-line organizations, such as researchers, project managers, and operations, to ensure safety basis projects are completed and submitted to the Department of Energy (DOE) for approval on schedule.
  • Identify DSA commitments and derive TSRs to ensure hazardous and radioactive material releases are prevented or mitigated.
  • Collaborate in establishing goals, setting priorities, and advising management of nuclear safety issues.
  • Communicate frequently with project managers, design engineers, criticality safety engineers, and other analysts in tracking and coordinating analysis activities and project design progress.
  • Maintain access to facilities, as assigned.
  • May provide direction for evaluation and resolution of complex engineering problems.
  • May lead reactor regulatory development and licensing tasks and direct the efforts of project team members.
  • May mentor and assist in developing junior staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Level 2: Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related field and (2) years of related experience or a Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Level 3: Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related field and (5) years of related experience or a Master’s Degree in Engineering and (2) years of related experience.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “L” clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
    The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or Physics.
  • Coursework and/or experience in Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) and/or Dose Consequence Analysis.
  • Proficiency in the use of analytical tools.
  • Experience with the commercial nuclear industry, nuclear military branches, state and federal regulators, and technology researchers at DOE Laboratories.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. Dexterity sufficient to don and doff radioactive anti-contamination garments, as well as use instrumentation to survey self and personal materials. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.     Job Information:
  • The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($79,344 – $162,732) / Level 3 ($95,256 – $195,288). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
