The Department of Physical Therapy (DPT) is a growing Department that provides the only provincial program for the education of entry-to- practice physical therapists. The MPT-V Site Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations and oversight of the Master of Physical Therapy’s (MPT) Vancouver site. This includes acting as the primary manager of communication for the Vancouver site; ensuring that the educational spaces meet departmental needs and health and safety guidelines; managing alignment to UBC’s policies, procedures, and guidelines; and managing an effective and efficient staff team.Organizational StatusThe DPT is a research-intensive unit with award winning faculty conducting state-of-the art healthcare research. The Department also provides the only provincial program for the education of entry-to-practice Physical Therapists, as well as graduate rehabilitation programs. Through rigorous scholarly activity, high standards of instruction and creative opportunities for learning, the Department provides leadership for the profession of Physical Therapy.This position reports to the Sr. Manager, PT Programs.Work PerformedProgram Oversight:

  • As part of a team of MPT Site Managers across the province, develops and implements systems, strategies, and processes to contribute to the effectiveness and sustainability of the MPT program.
  • Ensures MPT Program delivery remains compliant with accreditation standards and guidelines, including advising MPT-V faculty and external instructors on PEAC standards.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact at the MPT-Vancouver site. Ensures open communication for all faculty and staff within the MPT program in both a multi-campus environment and a distributed education environment. Responsible for resolving, or appropriately redirecting, unique and complex issues that may arise from faculty, students, and staff.
  • Manages the MPT-V educational spaces, including facilities and IT. This includes developing plans and proposals for space upgrades. Works with the Director of Administration on larger or more complex problems and issues that arise in shared or non-educational spaces.

Education Administration:

  • Manages MPT-V classroom support staff to ensure educational facilities at the Vancouver site meet the operational needs of the MPT Program. Resolves complex issues that arise amongst site staff, faculty and a large team of part-time external instructors to MPT students receive a high-quality educational experience.
  • Manages purchasing decisions for the site including strategizing on budget allocation for equipment purchases and maintenance for the MPT-V site, has oversight over a significant portion of the site budget related to program delivery (approx. $200,000/year).
  • Receives requests and suggestions for new program equipment from faculty and reviews it for feasibility against budget and space considerations.

Staff Management:

  • Manages the Classroom Support staff at the MPT-Vancouver site. This includes: hiring, managing workload; providing oversight; conducting performance reviews; and implementing disciplinary action or termination if required.
  • Works to resolve conflicts and/or manage disputes to ensure Classroom Support staff are confident and comfortable working within their teams and are meeting performance expectations.
  • Promotes and develops a team-based, inclusive culture to ensure the administrative functions of the MPT-V program is as efficient and effective as possible.
  • Ensures alignment and/or adherence to collective agreements for both staff and students.

Education Delivery:

  • Manages the day-to-day planning, academic curriculum delivery, and assessment of the distributed Master of Physical Therapy Program (MPT) program at the Vancouver site. Works cooperatively with site managers at the other distributed sites to ensure equity and equivalent delivery of program at all sites.
  • In collaboration with the Faculty Site Leads (Academic and Clinical), ensures effective delivery of all aspects of the MPT program at the Vancouver site, including in-person exams and OSCEs.
  • Manages the planning, preparation, and delivery of Department events at the MPT-V site, including Orientation Week, MMIs, OSCEs, Induction ceremony and graduation.
  • Strategizes with other site managers and Senior Manager, PT Programs to improve program processes and ensure optimal delivery of educational programming.
  • As part of the MPT-V Program Leadership, utilizes student, educator, and staff feedback, to improve student and faculty experiences by creating efficiencies in workflow through creative problem solving and innovative process creation.
  • Analyzes and implements new strategies based on instructor and student feedback and makes suggestions to department leadership for improving the student and instructor experience.
  • Manages the delivery of student academic accommodations at the Vancouver site. Advises faculty regarding program accommodation policies and procedures, and strategizes on program delivery options to meet novel academic accommodations.

Errors in judgment or decision-making could affect student progression through the program and the quality student education. Errors could result in the creation poorly informed policies. Errors in judgement around communications and support to staff, faculty, or students could impact the Departments’ reputations.Supervision Received

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.– Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own– Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsUniversity degree in a relevant discipline, along with related education management experience supervising staff in a unionized environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to summarize, analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations. Demonstrated success in developing or improving operational policies, procedures and processes. Proven ability to adapt and work effectively in a multi-task environment under pressure with high volume of work and critical deadlines. Demonstrated organizational and project management skills. Ability to make decisions and recommendations involving complex issues. Ability to establish effective productive working relationships with a variety of diverse stakeholders. Ability to exercise tact, discretion and JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, inclusion) principles.
