The Marketing and Outreach Coordinator for HRWC serves as a member of a three-person marketing team, supporting organization-wide communications strategies that further HRWC’s brand and goals across a wide range of marketing and communications channels. They also support public education and outreach efforts for assigned projects, including the impacts of stormwater runoff; promoting green stormwater infrastructure techniques and shoreline best practices; restoration projects that prepare the watershed for climate change; and recreational access to the river. These projects aim to inspire targeted audiences to take action by raising awareness of watersheds and water quality issues, increasing audience engagement, and changing attitudes or behaviors to prevent or reduce pollution.

The Marketing and Outreach Coordinator is familiar with integrated multi-channel marketing and communications principles and understands social marketing and behavior change concepts. They use creative strategies and techniques to achieve measurable results. They create strategic, impactful multimedia content using their design, copywriting, and video skills, as well as their knowledge of integrated marketing.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Organization-wide marketing, communications and department operations (30%)

• Work with the marketing team to implement organization-wide communications strategies, while evaluating analytics to inform content strategy and amplify our mission
• Design and produce of on-brand communications campaigns and materials that support HRWC’s strategic goals across a wide range of communication channels
• Participate in coordinating organization-wide editorial calendar, ensuring timely execution of all communications deliverables
• Serve as an HRWC brand ambassador—working with teams to uphold brand and messaging guidelines, keeping brand assets up-to-date and accessible organization-wide, and offering training for staff as needed
• Coordinate day-to-day communication systems including social media, email marketing, websites, and department policies and procedures
• Upkeep HRWC’s media library
• Work with a small cross-departmental team to coordinate and staff HRWC’s outreach booth
• Coordinate the work of HRWC marketing and communications volunteers and interns

Public education and outreach project work (60%)

• Provide marketing and communications support on environmental education and outreach projects (working collaboratively with HRWC’s program staff) to develop outreach strategies, creative briefs, marketing materials and methods to measure effectiveness that align with programmatic goals, meet grant deliverables, and engage and educate external audiences
• Work within budgets and timelines to implement projects and track results
• Prepare written reports (quarterly and annual) to track and communicate progress on projects to internal and external audiences
• Work with contractors to produce and distribute materials
• Liaise between project staff and partners to facilitate decision-making
• Represent HRWC and partners at public events, including some weekends and evenings with some public speaking involved

Organizational support (10%)

• Participate in staff and departmental meetings, strategic planning, and other organization events and activities
• Support the development of new projects, grant proposals, and other fundraising efforts
• Implementing other HRWC priorities as a part of project teams and committees to advance the scientific, communications and management goals of the Huron River watershed

Required Qualifications

• ​​Minimum of 2 years of experience in a marketing or communications role with a nonprofit, or equivalent experience, preferably with an emphasis on marketing, communications or outreach; or a Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations or related field.​​ ​
• ​​​Knowledge of emerging strategies in marketing, communications and outreach
• Organized​,​ with demonstrated ability to balance both planned and unanticipated tasks and assignments
• Experience designing, writing, editing and proofreading materials
• Experience with graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) and strong design skills including the ability to quickly develop visually engaging multi-media content
• Excellent writing skills including ability to write clear impactful messaging and calls to action
• Knowledge of and experience using GA4, WordPress, social media, email, CRM platforms (Salesforce a plus) and​/or​ other digital marketing tools
• Interest in engaging the public and community decision makers
• Good at working independently​, as well as​ collaborating in small organizational teams

​​Preferred Qualifications ​

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
• Demonstrated interest in environmental issues
• Familiarity with Southeast Michigan
• Mastery of graphic design software and strong design skills

• Use of a vehicle and willingness to travel within four-county area in Southeast Michigan
• Available to work some evenings and weekends
• Ability to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone, including close vision for computer work Ability to meet the demands of the work environment including physical activity (setting up an outreach booth with educational materials and other event-related tasks including carrying up to 25 pounds), being in indoor and outdoor locations in a variety of temperatures, light conditions, activity and noise levels
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license for driving in the State of Michigan

Compensation & Pay Transparency

The starting salary for this position is $60,205 and is non-negotiable. HRWC is committed to pay equity, and all staff are hired at established rates. Employees receive an annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of 2.5%, applied consistently across the organization. Additionally, staff are eligible for merit-based promotions, which carry an average salary increase of approximately 10% and are typically awarded every four to six years based on performance and organizational need.

HRWC supports a hybrid work environment with the ability to work both remotely and from HRWC’s offices in Ann Arbor, MI. HRWC staff are expected to be office-based a minimum of three days/week.
