The Managing Editor is the senior journalistic leader and drives the editorial strategy for the station.This person will develop, implement and oversee short and long range objectives for regular daily storytelling, pilots, short-term projects and news specials, ensuring they’re developed with an integrated multi-platform approach and serve audiences looking for audio, video and text-based content. This person will also collaborate with other leaders and units across CBC to maximize the impact of our journalism.The ideal candidate is a strategic leader who is laser focused on audience needs and has a proven track record of driving change. That means winning at live and breaking news as well as with original and enterprise journalism, ensuring we are talking about what matters most to the people of the GTA.The Managing Editor sets objectives for the station and ensures the work has a measurable impact. The Managing Editor executes strategies for building meaningful relationships with new audiences through smart journalism, thoughtful storytelling and community outreach. The Managing Editor will hire, inspire, mentor, support and develop staff, ensuring the team, like the city it serves, reflects a wide range of experiences and perspectives. This inclusive leader will work with a team focused on service, strong communication, shared goals, accountability and results.The Managing Editor is accountable to the public for all of CBC Toronto’s journalism and will answer complaints to the Ombudsman regarding the station’s coverage. This person will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories and our programs are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, and intelligent. As the journalistic leader in Canada’s largest market, the Managing Editor plays a key role in working with leaders across the Ontario Region and on CBC’s network teams to deliver breaking and developing stories for national as well as local audiences.The successful candidate has the following qualities:Exceptional critical thinking skillsA drive and commitment to serve the audienceA compassionate and inclusive approach to leadership

A clear, confident and collaborative communication styleA strategic approach to daily journalism, against established goals and prioritiesConfidence and experience with a variety of storytelling formats and platforms, including breaking news, features, investigative, as well as radio, video, social and digital platformsCultural sensitivity, awareness and a demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity both in the workplace and in content decision makingA keen understanding and passion for local journalismAn ability to connect easily with a wide range of personalities, perspectives and experiencesKnowledge and understanding of social, cultural, political issues, events, and trends, especially as they pertain to the GTA audience.A commitment to continuous learningA sense of adventure and an eagerness to try new thingsExperience required:Minimum of 10 years’ related leadership experience, including experience leading a newsroomA track record of guiding complex journalistic decision makingExperience managing staff and resources within budgetary constraintsExperience leading the application of journalistic standards and practices in a daily newsroom settingAn ongoing interest in and understanding of media trends as they apply to a multiplatform newsroomExperience in setting clear objectives and goals, and then to deliver on themProven ability to make decisions rapidly and frequently within tight deadlinesStrong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to be clear, concise, and precise on journalistic and programming mattersExperience leading a news team during major breaking news eventsKnowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and journalismExperience hiring and supporting new staff in a journalistic setting, including defining expectations and following up where appropriateExperience working with video an/or audio storytelling is essentialTasks:Provides strategically driven editorial leadership daily and on all station projectsResponsible for application of the CBC’s journalistic standards and practicesResponds to complaints to the OmbudsmanWorks collaboratively with other CBC leaders to ensure strong national coverage of stories in the GTAWorks closely with legal team when requiredDevelops and executes strategy against goalsBuilds and maintains strong relationships between the Toronto local team and colleagues across the country as well as those with the CBC network to the benefit of CBC Toronto and the CBC as a wholeWorks with MEs and other colleagues across the country to achieve strategic goalsBuilds relationships with community leaders and groups in the communityEnsures that all CBC policies and procedures are followedWorks with finance staff to ensure costs are tracked and budgets are followedHires and ensures the training and development of all staffCandidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the nextstep will be asked to complete a background check.
