Title: Lead CounselorState Role Title: Counselor IIHiring Range: $65,000 – $85,000Pay Band: 3Agency: Department of Military AffairsLocation: Commonwealth ChallengeAgency Website:Recruitment Type: General Public – GJob DutiesAbout the Agency:The Mission of the Virginia National Guard Commonwealth ChalleNGe Youth Academy is to intervene in the lives of 16-18 year old teenagers by providing the values, skills, education, and self-discipline needed to produce responsible, productive citizens, and to do so in a highly structured learning environment.Purpose of Position:To provide counseling and guidance services to Virginia National Guard Commonwealth ChalleNGe Youth Academy participants, as well as provide supervisory support to the full time counseling staff.Job Duties:10% – Performance Management:
-The requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation;
-Performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur;
-Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absences;35% – Counseling:
-Identifies and helps Cadets that are identified as having mental, emotional, or behavioral issues to develop coping mechanisms and acceptable behaviors;
-Participates in daily morning meetings to evaluate cadets and make recommendations regarding cadet training and duties as well as recommendations to be evaluated and if required, disenrollment from the program;
-Ensures the confidentiality of all cadets is enforced in the Counseling department and throughout ChalleNGe;
-Participates in the Cadet Services Board, monthly or as required.25% – Manage All Aspects of the Cadet Advocacy Program:
-Ensures quality care and treatment of all cadets throughout the class;
-Provides two individual counseling sessions to cadets per class;
-Provides group counseling sessions to cadets by platoon.15% – Develop, Plan, and Administer a Behavioral & Life Skills Program:
-Develop a behavioral and life skills program that helped students succeed in the program;
-Teach cadets about tools and knowledge they need to become mature young adults.5% – Screening & Interviewing Applicants:
-Participates in the weekly ARC meetings to screen applicants for the upcoming class;
-Conducts phone interviews of candidates to determine if they meet the criteria to be accepted into the program.5% – Training:
-Provides in-service training and recommendations to the staff on methods to deal with different cadet behaviors;
-Provides Confidentiality, CPS, and Gang Awareness training to the staff.5% – Develop & Implement Intern/Volunteer Program:
-Develop, implement and maintain a program for interns and volunteers;
-Provides guidance to counseling staff on how to execute the program and work with the intern or volunteers;
-Brief ChalleNGe Department Heads weekly on intern/volunteer status.Minimum QualificationsExperience in developing, or delivering social, educational, vocational or health related programs;Experience with as-risk youth required;Knowledge of human behavior;Evidence of successful teaching/counseling experience;Knowledge of emotional, social and economic and physical needs of high school age children; group treatment process, and diverse learning populations;Ability to assess, counsel, and provide guidance;Interviewing and negotiating skills;Knowledge of adolescent behavior;Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills;Presentation skills;Ability to train and educate staff and Cadets;Ability to develop and implement guidance and counseling program;Ability to analyze problems and recommend solutions;Previous leadership and supervisory experience.Additional ConsiderationsSeveral years’ experience as a counselor for at-risk youth;Special InstructionsYou will be provided a confirmation of receipt when your application and/or résumé is submitted successfully.
