Greencorps Chicago is the City of Chicago’s green industry job training program for individuals with barriers to employment run in partnership with WRD Environmental. Greencorps’ mission is to empower residents from Chicagoland’s underserved neighborhoods to create change in their lives and communities through training, service, and career opportunities in environmental fields.

This position will be employed by WRD Environmental. The Project Supervisor will provide oversight of Greencorps Chicago projects and trainees to ensure quality workmanship and training experiences. This position will be responsible for a combination of green industry and construction projects. This includes scheduling, procurement, providing coaching and instructions to crew supervisors, communicating with project partners, quality checks, and reporting. It also includes providing instruction and job training of technical skills and knowledge to program participants in classroom settings and on field projects. 

The responsibilities of the Project Supervisor include:

  • Manage and implement multiple active projects simultaneously.
  • Coach and mentor crew supervisors and trainees to promote their development.
  • Ensure crews meet deadlines, stay within budget, and produce a high-quality product.
  • Foster strong working relationships with project and funding partners
  • Proactively plan project schedules, adjusting as necessary.
  • Communicate project tasks to crew supervisors and prepare them for the project.
  • Complete detailed project reporting
  • Daily on-site crew management and hands-on involvement in project activities, as needed.
  • Follow, promote, and implement safe work practices.
  • Participate as a positive team member with fellow staff members.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of operational systems.
  • Assist in hiring and mentoring Crew Supervisors.
  • Provide technical and educational training in classroom and field settings.
  • Provide regular constructive feedback to program participants throughout the year
  • Other tasks as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements for this position include:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, landscape, forestry, green infrastructure, or related field, supplemented by five years of experience in related fields; or have seven or more years of related work experience.
  • Experience managing projects in the above-mentioned industries and experience in direct crew supervision.
  • Strong project management skills required (leadership, critical thinking, time management, communication)
  • Ability to train participants in tree care, ecological restoration, landscaping, and/or green infrastructure required.
  • Ability to obtain IL pesticide license and CW Burn Crew certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Strong knowledge of invasive species and/or weed identification and vegetation management practices.
  • Construction, carpentry, and hardscape installation experience preferred.
  • •trong oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Culturally competent and able to relate and communicate with diverse populations and groups.
  • Experience or previous participation in a jobshiringnearme.org Corps program a plus.
  • Green infrastructure (raingardens, drywells, etc.) project installation and maintenance experience a plus
  • Chainsaw, chipper, and other equipment experience a plus.
  • Industry certifications (S130/190 burn certification, ISA Certified Arborist, NGICP, IL pesticide license) a plus.
  • Ability to operate large vehicles with trailers and large equipment (skid steer, stump grinder, etc.) a plus.
  • Strong computer and administrative skills (Microsoft Office, email, calendar management, etc.).
  • Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
  • Must be available to work a regular schedule of Monday-Friday, 6:45am-3:15pm, and irregular hours when necessary.
