The Applied Biological Sciences Group (QLA), located within the Asymmetric Operations Sector (AOS), is committed to APL’s mission to provide critical contributions to critical challenges.

We are seeking a laboratory technician to provide a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers a safe and effective biological and chemical laboratory environment in our Asymmetric Operations Sector (AOS). We are a hard-working team who love taking on ambitious, multi-disciplinary problems that often require expertise across scientific disciplines and engineering approaches. As Laboratory Technician, you will serve as an integral member of the group, contributing to general lab organization, serving as a resource to staff for managing workflows, managing inventory, and ensuring instrument performance through rigorous maintenance schedules.

You will use your excellent organizational and problem-solving skills to keep processes running efficiently across facilities, coordinating service contracts, ordering consumables, and optimizing facility function.

As a Laboratory Technician you will:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of numerous laboratories including BSL2/BSL2+, chemical, and, health engineering and human performance assessment facilities.
  • Organize equipment maintenance and service contracts.
  • Support general procurement needs.
  • Coordinate closely with the APL environmental health and safety office and group staff to ensure best safety practices are being implemented across the laboratories.
  • Develop new or revised procedures to optimize the function of the laboratories to enable multi-disciplinary work
  • Facilitate a culture that promotes safety.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…

  • Have a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Have 1+ years of experience in a biological and/or chemical laboratory.
  • Have experience operating and troubleshooting a wide variety of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Have experience in environmental health, occupational health, occupational (or industrial) safety, chemistry, biology, physics, environmental engineering, or a related field.
  • Have experience preparing written reports detailing test results.
  • Are self-motivated and demonstrate initiative and flexibility when working in a team environment.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Are proficient in MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Have technical school training.
  • Have an Associate’s Degree and 5+ years of professional experience in the Biological Sciences or relevant field.
  • Have 5+ years of experience managing a biology, chemistry or related laboratory.
  • Are able to create operating procedures and are organized in a laboratory or field setting.
  • Have a proven track record of successfully developing laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Have experience with property inventory systems.
  • Have certifications as Certified Biosafety Professional (CBSP) or related.
  • Are able to travel occasionally to participate in field tests.
  • Have an active SECRET security clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
