Together we are more than 5,000 dedicated faculty, librarians and staff supporting the University of Victoria’s diverse academic programs, world-class research and commitment to civic engagement.Job SummaryThe Biotechnical Support Centre (BSC) in the Department of Biochemistry & Microbiology provides support to the teaching and research programs in the Faculty of Science as well as the Aquatics unit and the Animal Care Facility. As part of the BSC team, this position maintains, calibrates, repairs and modifies a diverse array of electronic, electro-mechanical, hydro-mechanical and mechanical scientific laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, diagnosing and calibrating existing inventory; reviewing manufacturers’ specifications, schematics and costs for components. The position will evolve as required to help accomplish the goals of the BSC.Job RequirementsExperience:
Must have a minimum of one (1) year of recent experience in a similar position, preferably in a post-secondary or institutional environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Related work experience should include:

  • Experience with the repair and maintenance of electronics/electromechanical equipment.
  • Comfortable with the operation of various life sciences lab equipment.
  • Hands-on experience in the area of troubleshooting, repair or fabrication.
  • Knowledge and experience in a variety of disciplines for the purpose of troubleshooting and repairing devices of electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, hydro-mechanical, mechanical, and/or chemical nature.

Preference will be given to applicants with:

  • Working practical knowledge of building electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems.
  • Understanding of biological sciences and physics principles.
  • Ability to read and understand schematic, wiring or technical diagrams and instructions.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • A strong self-starter with attention to detail and follow through.
  • Troubleshooting skills with good logical deductive reasoning abilities, able to evaluate situations and make critical decisions.
  • Able to skillfully operate hand and power tools.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency.
  • Colour vision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a service oriented attitude and able to work effectively in a dynamic team with people from various disciplines, cultures, backgrounds and different personality types.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to prepare documentation, maintain records and keep detailed notes.
  • A desire to improve knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis and keep up with new technologies.
  • Able to remain calm under pressure, during urgent situations and be able to cope with shifting priorities.
  • Resourceful and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work with constant disruptions and distractions, while still being able to accomplish required tasks and assignments.
  • Ability to perform the physical duties of the job including: working outdoors in potentially inclement weather, working with high temperature steam equipment, excellent mobility (including lifting up to 25 kg, bending, climbing and reaching), performing repetitive tasks, and ability to work at heights.

Specialized Knowledge/Education:
Graduation from a recognized college, institute or equivalent, specializing in biomedical technology, Electronics, life sciences or similar. Training or experience in biomedical technology, electronics, control systems, or similar is considered an asset.
