More specifically, the journalist will conduct interviews and write news stories and compelling current affairs content for delivery on digital streams.The Cree Unit produces two weekday radio programs, a weekly television program and stories for the CBC North website and CBC News App.Our focus is on original journalism, finding the angles that matter to our audience and telling stories that are rooted in our Cree-speaking communities across Québec. We are there for the community when it counts. We are guided by the principles of excellence, collaboration and creativity.We are looking for an excellent writer who demonstrates exceptional skill in going beyond the headlines to bring more depth and context to CBC North’s digital platforms. We are looking for a journalist who is tapped into local communities to listen and bring their voices forward. We aim to deliver trusted journalism that is inclusive, innovative, helpful and bold.The digital journalist should be comfortable producing all the elements of a good story, including video, photos and text.A strong candidate for this position is curious and likes speaking with people, is innovative, and open to trying new things. You understand the importance of reflecting all Cree communities in our content. You have experience working in Eeyou Istchee and know the Cree language and culture.In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and immediate, and resonate with the communities we serve.For reference purposes, and at the time of this posting, the shift is Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm in the Montréal office.Tasks:Pitch and produce original and engaging stories with digital and social audiences top of mind.Respond quickly to breaking and developing news including live events.Write stories based on your own reporting but also collaborate with other CBC journalists and current affairs teams.Package stories with strong headlines, photos, video, audio, graphics and links to deepen engagement.

Prepare original stories for broadcast platforms and collaborate with other journalists for multi-platform rollouts.File to the cbc.ca/north website and CBC Indigenous and CBC Montreal sitesCopy editing stories written by team members as needed.Prepare and post content on social media channels.Gather and edit photos and video.QualificationsBachelor’s degree or the equivalentMinimum (3) three years of journalism experience or equivalentSkillsExperience in covering or working in Eeyou IstcheeStrong communication and interpersonal skills; strong collaborative team player.Excellent writing and editing skills.Ability to generate original, enterprise journalism.Comfortable and willing to experiment with new and innovative storytelling approaches on digital and social platforms.Strong visual storytelling skills, including photos, graphics and video.Clear and creative ability to write headlines and package stories.Fluent in English.Knowledge of the Cree language and culture.Good comprehension of spoken French is an asset.Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.Knowledge of radio and TV communications, an asset.Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment.Please include a letter of interest detailing how your experience would be an asset to us, as well as what contribution you’d like to make with a link to your online demo or website, blog or video in your cover letter.Selected candidates may be subject to the following:Complete an assignmentInterviewCandidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to being a leader in reflecting our country’s diversity.
