Location: Ericsson R&D center Massy, FranceEricsson is building a new R&D team in Massy, France, covering many cutting-edge technologies such as AI/ML, cloud, and 5G and beyond technologies. Within this new lab, Standards & Technology unit, is part of Business Unit Network’s global Standards & Technology organization. At Business Unit Networks, Standards & Technology secures technology leadership in Radio Access Networks (RANs) by actively driving New Concepts, Standardization, SW- and HW Research, Architecture and Testbeds. Technical focus includes 5G evolution, IoT, Digital twins, Automation / Machine Learning and Security.As a part of this new young and talented team of researchers, we are looking for the next year interns that will help us grow and engage in our activities on non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). Mobile communication over NTN has drawn a lot of attention in both academia and industry, for example it has been a focus area in 3GPP since Rel-15. Attention is given to satellite communications and, more specifically, low earth orbit (LEO) deployment with on-board satellite baseband processing.The objective of this internship is to perform traffic modeling and system analysis in the framework of the provision of Direct-to-Device (D2D) services using NTN in LEO with on-board baseband processing, based on the simulation environment already available.The internship activities will consist of

• Collecting data and defining models describing the geographical distribution of NTN users for different regions of the world (in particular USA, Australia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Africa, central south America), and the variations of traffic demand over time.
• Defining traffic distribution scenarios representative of different market penetration scenarios.
• Defining constellation system scenarios.
• Taking into account the characteristics of 3GPP air interface, perform simulations to evaluate satellite key baseband performance requirements for the different scenarios, including time distribution of the satellite traffic load, satellite bandwidth needs, satellite handover rate, signaling load.

To be successful in the role you need to have

• Strong background in wireless communications and mathematics.
• Familiar with 3GPP air interface specifications.
• Proven experience with MATLAB and other similar simulation tools.
• Familiar with system-level simulations.
• Qualities of fast learning, critical thinking, autonomy, and teamwork.
• Fluent English language skills in both writing and conversation. French language skills are a plus.
